  1. 5 easy ways to help prevent virus infections...

Almost forgot! POP-UPS.... I personally don't use a pop-up blocker. If I see a computer that is getting inundated with Pop-ups, there is a reason (an infection). Blocking the pop-ups is not a "fix" and only hides the real problem. If you do get a questionable pop-up, and want to close it...
  2. 5 easy ways to help prevent virus infections...

5 easy ways to minimize (or even stop) infections! A little prevention goes a long ways. I personally have not been infected or compromised in over 5 years. I surf the Internet just like everyone else and read TONS of email every day. I live by the following 5 rules: #1. Get a good...
  3. Nonstop viruses, can't get rid of them?

Macs can compromised by just visiting a website too. I am not bashing Macs. They are good computers. There is just a lot of misinformation out there. Check this out: http://www.macworld.com/article/132733/2008/03/hack.html 5 easy ways to minimize (or even stop) infections! A little...
  4. Looking for a new LCD monitor - suggestions?

I am a big fan of Samsung. Did you know that there are only a handful of companies who actually manufacture LCD displays? Then, they get re-branded by everyone else. Samsung is one of the leading manufacturers in LCD displays. Dell does sell some re-branded Samsung, but they are not all...
  5. Will this work for a workstation ???

I sure would consider Vista 64 though! CS4 is just around the corner and it will be 64 Bit VISTA compatible. You won't be limited to 3 GB of RAM in Photoshop anymore. Flexi 8.5 should be able to run on Vista 64 as well (so says the Flexi engineer I spoke to at SGIA).
  6. should I go with PC or Mac for vehicle wraps

Thanks Vid! We build PCs just for vehicle wrap design. That's all we do. We build for Fellers, Aurora Graphics, Mutoh recommends our systems (they just posted a link on their website), and even SAI (Flexi) is apparently recommending our systems to some of its customers (no official...
  7. Will this work for a workstation ???

RAM is inexpensive right now. I would load up as much as you motherboard can hold (usually 4GB or 8GB). You will need to stick to 32 Bit Windows (4GB RAM Max) unless you are running Flexi 8.5. If you are running Flexi 8.5 you can most likely install 64 Bit XP and use 8GB of RAM if your...
  8. How to wipe clean my hard drives?

If you really want it gone forever, you have to format it, write data to the entire disk (usually zeros 0000000000), and then format it again, more zeros, and format, and more zeros. You get the idea. But again, this takes time. To me, it is kind of like shedding mail, then burning it, then...
  9. Just Another Newbie

Welcome from Phoenix, AZ. Good luck with the biz!
  10. How to wipe clean my hard drives?

I agree with Techman. There just isn't a lot of useful data on most people's PCs. But in the event that you have "sensitive" data, keep your drive or run Killdisk at least 3 times.
  11. How to wipe clean my hard drives?

Flame, this is a judgment call on your part. Data is almost ALWAYS recoverable, even after formatting and writing over the old data. That being said, it also requires special software, specialized knowledge, and time to recover a formatted drive. I like the idea of removing the drive and...

    Welcome fellow techy!
  13. Coputer hardware pros only

I have built several RIP workstations with Onyx installed. I have seen very few cases of software not running on a RAID setup. More often than not, the software company doesn't want to support their software on RAID systems because of the added variables. I like to separate the design and RIP...
  14. Coputer hardware pros only

The Velociraptors are awesome! Unfortunately, they are a bit pricey $$$. But still, awesome drive. They will undoubtable be integrated into our systems before the end of the year. We tested a few of these and had one fail pretty fast. Upon researching it a little, it appears as if WD...
  15. Coputer hardware pros only

RAID 10 fixes that. It requires 4 drives, but it uses 2 sets of "striped" drives, which are "mirrored" images of each other. The first set is an identical copy of the second. That way, if one drive fails, you always have a good copy of the data on the alternate set of drives and can keep on...
  16. Coputer hardware pros only

SCSI didn't go away. Actually, in the last few years, the enterprise drive of choice has been SAS (Serial Attached SCSI). A RAID array of 7,200 RPM (SATA) drives can be significantly faster than a single 15,000 RPM (SAS) drive. Having a RAID array of 2 (or more) 15,000 RPM drives is a...
  17. Files on my Cd-RW drive that will not delete!

This is why I use flash drives! Well, at least, one of the reasons. With flash drives, larger email attachment limits, and FTP, I think I am almost completely weaned off of CD / DVD.
  18. Files on my Cd-RW drive that will not delete!

I totally misunderstood the problem. I thought that you were trying to delete a file from the CD-RW itself.
  19. Files on my Cd-RW drive that will not delete!

You have closed out of the file in other programs right? For example, you can't have a file open in Photoshop and try to delete it from the CD at the same time. I know it is a silly question, but it is common.
  20. Files on my Cd-RW drive that will not delete!

What I meant is, save all the files from the current CD to your computer (desktop is easiest to find). Then burn a new CD with only the files you need.
