I don't have a problem with the background as it has that sun coming up feel to it. it also makes the yellows look great and it isn't so over done that it over powers the logo. it seemed to fit the look. not too sure what organic thing you could put there instead

how big, how complex?

at .5" thick, I don't think you can get anything but black or white. painted would work. vinyl applied to the surface would also work as long as you use a good cast vinyl and not the cheap stuff

add a straight line to measure from or use the bottom of the paper backing as a straight line.

website is good as people can get location and phone number from that. it wouldn't hurt to add a phone number too. I know that I have never used a phone on a truck to contact a company but since this is a rolling ad for you, it can't hurt. just don't make it so big it over powers everything else.
