Not a Roland owner but try cleaning your encoder strip. You shouldn't get any banding when you change out an empty cartridge, or is that only on Rolands.

PVC would probably be the worse if it will be in sun light, why not use Maxmetal or another light weight material.

I'm not a Roland owner but try cleaning the encoder strip, seems when things go weird like that, that's one of the first things to do.

I had the same problem last year but not as bad, clean your clear encoder strip with a 50/50 of alcohl & water, rub lightly then see if that fixes it if not shut your machine off and remove the cover to where your heads are, there is a sensor that reads the encoder strip that need to be removed...

Your probably printing in Uni-direction mode, change it to bi-directional mode
