  1. Starting out!

In Illy you would draw 1/4 of that, rotate and copy 45 degrees, "CMND D" 3 times and done..... seems like the thread police are out in full force....
  2. Starting out!

The type you show looks squished or forced oblique, I would also watch the kerning...the color combo works...it may work on the flat black. When I was reading your idea, I was thinking Sailor Jerry lowbrow style. That style uses certain typefaces, here are some references...
  3. A little help with some clipart...

If there is one on the sign, then take a picture of that or make a better scan of the card and hand trace it....I've thumbed through a few printers ornament books for the 40's -50's and I can't seem to find that exact one but there are plenty of old school butcher clipart in that style.
  4. Starting out!

Can't comment on the red and flat black since you are also using lime green also.....I'm interested in seeing your logo ideas, especially if it's the lowbrow/rodder style. One thing nice about a 30" plotter is you can cut 24" material....if you can afford it, get it....
  5. Population in your area?

My general area has 85,000+ with around 15 known local sign shops serving that area. My work is a little specialized that the area will not support me, though I have been trying to get the design for a large mall signage system coming up in the next 5 years, but so far no bites
  6. Starting out!

    1. Would you recommend this machine or the brand? My experience with Roland has been good, I have one but I prefer my Graphtec. On the Ultra Flex software...I'm assuming that is the Beacon re-packaged Flexi-Sign software...I would avoid store re-packaged. If you are going to stay with...
  7. Need some ClipArt help!

You don't need clip-art, you need simple illustrations. John Deaton at Toon Factory does illustrations to your needs...he is a merchant member here, I'm sure you will be pleased with his portfolio and work...

Looks like Berthold Akzidenz Light Condensed and Bold Condensed
  11. Illustrator can't fit my design

Scaling in any program has its advantages...like sending a proof and using the scaled drawings to measure your lettering placement...that is the majority of my work. I have not had too many issues with precision when scaling up. When I was a production monkey I saw the same mistakes when getting...
  12. Illustrator can't fit my design

I do all mine to scale using Cadtools.....but for simple stuff, CadTools is overkill. www.hotdoor.com
  13. Type Style ??

I though it was Marker Felt stretched out a bit.... http://www.creamundo.com/index.php?letra=m&lang=en&fuente=Marker+Felt+TTF
  14. cad-type welding?

I think the proper term is "trimming"...you copy and paste the outside box shape and place it on top, select the box shape and shapes you want "trimmed" away....page 119 on the Corel 12 User Guide
  15. cad-type welding?

I wish I knew my Corel speak better but in Illy I would have copy and pasted the ouside box shape on top and then use the "subtract from shape area"
  16. cad-type welding?

Once you get the hang of it Corel should be faster to deal with than Auto-Cad....I did this in Illustrator with Pathfinder and Expand tools but you can do it in Corel....just takes practice. The top is how I designed it, the middle is no overlapping for layering and screenprinting the third...
  17. calculating the actual area

That may be true there, but cities I have dealt with will measure overall space measured from the top and side of the word, not the actual added individual letter space....there are a few cities that do not allow cabinet signs so you have to measure the overall space. I have heard the argument...
  18. calculating the actual area

All the citys I have ever dealt with measure overall size and add the dead space in the letter area. The biggest disadvantage to that rule is a logo that uses upper/lower case with descending letters......especially long names. That dead space eats up square footage. All caps have a better...
  19. calculating the actual area

Ooops, the CorelDraw Sign Designers Yahoo group....
  20. calculating the actual area

It's not a pain with the ISOCalc plug-in or CadTools...submitting drawing to the city is a pain. I imagine the client valued his identity to get it as big as possible but I wonder how he really pulled it off and the cost. The forum is the CorelDraw Yahoo group. Quite a few very experienced and...
