always happens to me as well, converted to curves or not - I attribute it to rendering the smaller type - as said, fixed when zooming (or when the letters are larger on screen)

you can try and flip it - you will have to put new hole(s) in the correct places sounds like it might be effed tho - look at it under magnification and you can see the lines - if its all messed up, replace.

maybe clean the encoder strip sensor too - run some card stock that has a drop or two of alcohol through it
