Look at a cannon tx3000, I have 2 hp latex. It seems you have to run a 3 foot leader to make it print. It does print very well, just not very profitably.
Most likely the software is aging out. You will have to keep trying work a-rounds. Try tweaking the settings when you make the eps, look for the word flatten, compatibility or any other setting. If something is clicked, unclick it and visa versa.
Another option is print to a newer version of...
I think you are talking about scrim banners. For smaller banners under 96x54, Then I use https://www.grimco.com/Catalog/Products/PowerTape. Then I use a one part grommet from the back side. I only use about 1 inch, and never fold. I never have had a complaint.

For under 17k you can get a new hp. Go to a local bank, not a leasing company, You can pay it off in less than 4 years. If you buy a used one, do not buy from a sign shop, unless they can prove they did not use it much. We have a hp360 and 365 and have had very little trouble. I would not...

I am very surprised you have to use a thumb drive at all. If the machine is newer that 2010, spend the $300 for the network port. Also make sure you have at least .5 inches above the bar code on material. The other thing that helps is when you load your material roll it to the half way...
Look at stratojet, with 2 sets of cmyk heads you can print a 4 pass 4x8 sheet in 7 minutes. Not blazing but fast enough. And to my surprise I have no complaints about print quality with 4 pass. I did not think I could make it fit, but I just got rid of everything that was not making us...
