Typically if you mouse over the image the alt will display something like "this thread has no new posts" etc. the icons you highlighted vary on a couple of different factors like that. ie: new posts, no new posts, hot thread, thread closed, thread locked, sticky threads, etc....

Guests are anyone that is here that is not logged in as a member. To reduce server load, you can change the settings on how long it shows that people are viewing the site. In other words, "100 people viewing right now" could actually be 100 people within the last 30 minutes, hour, 4 hours...

Host Gator is good and has good customer service. 1and1 is rediculous.. They cant even upgrade the quota on a database, they have caused me MAJOR issues in the past. but for average sites for small businesses, godaddy, network solutions and voxdomains have all been equally pleasant...
