I have been doing some research on back lit signs....And pretty much every question I had was answered by searching the archives.....It is a valuable resource and I would suggest that the "newbies" make good use of it.....
I used to like pickles until all you could buy in the stores in our area were pickles imported from overseas...We are on a "Buy Canadian" kick for as much of our food as possible.....
I have to get at least 90.00 margin out of even the simplest job to make the 1 to 2 hours it takes to process the order worth while...Take the time to track how long it actually takes and you will see that 30.00 margin is only about 20.00 per hour on the average simple order.....
I do not think a full line high overhead sign shop should be doing too many 1 off yard signs.....The client needs to find a vendor appropriate for the job at hand......
When I need an oil change I head to Walmart for the 24.95 special not to GM Goodwrench for a 90.00 job.....I do not need GM...
Easier said than done......Most of the "pros" here would not give these folks the time of day (much like the reception they get on Signs101)....So to expect that they can get a job to learn about signs is not very realistic....
As long as folks keep buying over priced imported stuff, businesses will sell it....As much as I would love to sell just what I wanted to sell, I tend to sell stuff my clients want to buy....
I feel bad for folks trying to get work as a designer these days.......
It seems a couple times a week I get emails or phone calls from "out of work" designers......And because of competition from overseas there seems to be way more designers than there is work....
I can remember years back...
Have you looked at www.WiseStamp.com? I use it with Gmail and love it.....Not sure how or if it works with other programs...I have over 25 signatures and pick the one that is appropriate....I also use it for boiler plate letters....
Could the reason the prices run high be that guides of this type do not get much input from very small shops and/or home based businesses? These operation tend to price at the lower end of the scale...
Stouse starts at 50?...What quantities were you looking for?
http://www.polytag.com/
Not sure if they do short runs or will be less costly than Stouse who is local to you....
