  1. Pulling electrical sign permits - Houston, TX

A couple of things. Never be afraid to challenge the Inspector, in fact when in doubt, ask them to point to the infraction of non-compliance to the page in the NEC book. Also, take it up with the head inspector. Most times the inspector might be basing old NEC code i.e. Class II needing a...

  4. Cutting 1" acrylic

That all just seems real, errrr......too fast, for me anyway. I use single flute Belin, but I would probably be more inclined to use 3/8" over 1/2" for 1" material. My Colombo spindle's sweet spot is 12,000 RPM but I can go any, but I'd be going 7,500 rpm @ 2.85" IPS for 1/2", or 10,000 RPM's...

  12. Halo Letters

Like what you saw in the Sign Builder that caught your attention is great, but like most sign shops they run a marathon and poop out at the end. By this I mean poor planning and most importantly poor components on their part that light a sign but real awesome sign structure. If you're going...
  13. Halo Letters

You will most likely be okay. The thin reel tape stuff LED's is the worst, but it will be a good learning experience for you to witness those types of LED's first hand rather than use it for a paying customer. Why is it terrible?, because LED's do create a lot of heat unlike the myth that they...
  14. Trouble with lights

The short answer is, that's LED's, and the failure rate is astronomical. A reason why some major retailer and programs have gone back to Fluorescent and Neon Lamps for their signs and lighting. There is so much cheap stuff on the market. But without seen any real good shots of the actual...
  15. Trouble with lights

Just caught this part about ribbon LED's. That's the worst, definitely CV, and no way to dissipate the heat, especially if there is nothing metal for the strips to adhere too. The only time I would use ribbon is for a trade show booth where the usage is very low and temporary.
  16. Trouble with lights

First you're going to need to spill the beans on what mfg they are, we're all professionals here wanting to learn more and who to use and who to stay away from. There are all kinds of reasons as to why. I'm going to gamble and say their chinese, their constant voltage not constant current...
  17. looking for a link or someone to hire to teach me how make a sign lightbox

A listing lab such as UL or MET is more than just filling out data sheets. You need to build sign bodies, & structures according to the NEC and the listing labs requirements. If you live in an area where a listing lab is not required and all it takes is getting a local inspector to evaluate...
  18. Building Sign question

One important aspect getting passed up here is that fact that this is a trade, and is considered in most stated to be a "trade". That is why in most states you need a contractors license. A contractors license has nothing to do with "Unions". States set up these licenses to protect many...
  19. Translucent vinyl shows LED hot spots

Most LED specs are way off. A lot of times LED mfg's call out for 1 per foot, at a typical 5" depth I would add 2.5 per foot just to be safe and prolong the hot spotting that WILL come later when the light starts to degrade. At 3" expect o use a lot more per foot and tighter on the rows...
  20. Neon sign on tile

I see a location of London so I'm guessing London England, not somewhere like Ohio? If not then most regs are anything under 8' needs to be protected from hands touching or public accessible . Tile is tough especially for how many holes you will need to do, just tell em the tile will crack and...
