I believe this has to do with the scratch disk setup. I ran into that on my Mac, not so much on my PC. LOL Illy can be clunky, but then again so can PS.

Should not matter. Do you have Flexi or any other vector program? If so I've noticed that Flexi's file are often smaller than Illy's

Can you bring your Illy file into PS make it to size then add the effects there? That should work.

Or you can Dbl. click on the layer and it will open up the layer styles for you. I suggest creating a duplicate layer before you do this, always keep an original copy of your art. Also on a side note always - always name your layers.

Maybe I don't get what you are trying to do, but you could create a contour cut around them or convert the text to outlines then uncompound it select what you don't want and delete it. Did that help?
