  1. "OverSpray" issues with my Mimaki JV3-160SP

Do you ave any OEM inks you can swap in? This may not be your problem, but we tried aftermarket inks for a few months and eventually found we had the very same problem you're having, terrible overspray on the cyan head. We tried literally everything to fix it without luck. Finally as a final...
  2. Managing shop workflow

This is the solution. It's hard at first to pull the trigger on someone like an office manager who may not necessarily be producing billable work, but it's one of the best things you can do in your position. They will pay for themselves tenfold in a short amount of time.
  3. customer wants me to strip his 5-ton truck

Actually it works on fiberglass, you just have to be VERY careful. I stripped all the vinyl off of our boat last summer with it, worked fine. I've also stripped fiberglass box truck sides and as long as you don't use too much pressure or sit too long in one spot it won't burn the surface.
  4. Managing shop workflow

It's really hard to say without knowing alot more about how your shop currently works. How many employees do you have? How do you currently manage and schedule jobs? What's the ration of big/time consuming jobs to smaller quick jobs? What kind of work do you do? Specifically what kinds of issues...
  5. customer wants me to strip his 5-ton truck

Nah, reflective comes off like butter with the zapper.
  6. customer wants me to strip his 5-ton truck

Vinyl zapper. A job like this will easily justify it's purchase. We rarely remove vinyl but our vinyl zapper is one of our favorite tools.
  7. What material to use?

yes. reverse print on clear, laminate that with opaque white vinyl with clear adhesive (not gray adhesive like Orajet 3651). The adhesive of the clear vinyl will be what adheres to the backside of the plastic.
  8. To premask or not to premask...Opinions please

regular wrap with laminate: no premask unless you really like a good challenge.
  9. Good banner printer??

My vote is for Mimaki. We have a JV3 and a JV33 and they can burn through banner material without so much as a hiccup. Banner is heavy and is harder on printers than regular vinyl, Mimakis are built like a tank and stand up to that abuse well. I've heard mixed reviews on how well other lower-end...
  10. Poll - JV33 owners...what ink set do you use?

SS21. Wishing HS1 was available for it. The SS21 is noticably less durable than the SS2 inks in our JV3, especially on banners. Both are sold as "mild solvent" but I think they had to tone down the aggressiveness a little bit for the new Epson DX5 head. At least that's what's been told to me by...
  11. Born in a Pig Sty?

You all should meet our customer who's the chef/owner of the local Greek gyro restaurant. Talk about a stinky bastard. Dude works with yogurt and onions and lamb all day, he reeks of the most foul odor you can imagine. Every time he comes in we'll blow through an entire can of air freshener...
  12. Born in a Pig Sty?

Not really. We keep an immaculate shop geared to a high end clientèle. Why would I allow someone with mud-covered boots to trek all over the place leaving piles of mud and dirt and ruining my carpet? This isn't a construction trailer... Every time some muddy dude comes in here I have to pay $100...
  13. Born in a Pig Sty?

Yup. We've told many to take their boots off at the door.
  14. Help choosing next RIP -- Wasatch or Onyx??

My vote is for Onyx. We've never had an issue with stability since v.6, it seems lightning fast to me, and gives you alot of control over alot of things. Alot of people seem to complain about Cut Server but it's actually extraordinarily reliable and accurate for us, the print-contour cut...
  15. where to buy RIP software

Uhhh. What did you find for $400? You ain't gonna' get much for that, definitely not less. What printer and cutter anyway?
  16. Okay, tell me why this installation won't work.

Why not 6x6 posts instead of 4x4s? I know they're more, but not a huge amount (at least around here), they might resist warping more.
  17. Okay, tell me why this installation won't work.

The other concern I have is how you plan to pour mixed concrete into roughly a 3.5" dia. hole 9' in the air without spilling half of it down the pipe and making a mess. Seems like too much work, especially for a donated sign.
  18. Okay, tell me why this installation won't work.

Why not get standard U-channel sign posts, bolt two together to get a 12 footer, drive that in or bury it in concrete, and then just sleeve it in PVC? That way you have a stable, sturdy structure but with the nicer look of PVC you're after. I'd be concerned that even full of concrete and with...
  19. Mimaki jv3 printing wrong size

Media comp shouldn't cause a print to be 3/8" off over an 8' length. In theory you'd want to increase the number, I'd say substantially, to gain that 3/8" back, but then you're more than likely going to have white lines between each pass. Are you currently seeing a thin dark line between passes...
  20. RC Signs?

Larry's no longer there apparently. Shame too because their customer service is rough to say the least. They used to be fantastic, but the last 5 or 6 jobs from them were communication nightmares, late (or at least slower than they should have been), and the finished product was nowhere near as...
