Perhaps you could try saving or exporting the Photoshop file as an EPS. This may keep the vector objects intact as vector objects but not necessarily as smart objects.

The font you're describing is very likely the Eras knock-off that Corel supplied with CorelDraw up to maybe version 3 or 4. (Version 2 was WFN fonts -- version 3 and up was TT fonts). After that Corel supplied Bitstream fonts with a proper version of Eras.
