That is true, even Versaworks lets you recalibrate (re linearize) an existing profile. You could buy a i1 spectro for the amount of time, ink and materal you waste in one color critical job.
If you have time a audit local college or university Photoshop class. It will give you the basics and having other students around will help develop tricks and details you would have never used on your own. Well worth the $
