  1. Shaped Banners

signs365 will do them too... just ask for a custom quote.
  2. When "your" customers get signage elsewhere

Yep, this. I have the same customers who have ordered from me for 15+ years that still ask me if I make banners, or magnets or whatever... even when they've ordered them from me dozens of times in the past. For example, some have told me they just Googled for "magnets" (even to buy locally)...
  3. Question Is there a trick to keeping a print head from drying out?

Oh, I didn't know you could adjust auto clean intervals -- makes sense though. I wonder if that's available for the 1614? Time to hunt down a manual.

  5. Recommendations for cleaning acrylic?

For cleaning, yeah... what Boudica said. Or if you have blemishes to get rid of (and you aren't flame polishing), the Novus acrylic polish works really well.
  6. Did anybody else get a Signs 365 surprise?

Yes, a very nice product indeed. They put some money into these samples for sure. It's already on my wall. :)
  7. 20' Trailer wrap

Oh yeah, always by square foot (or more accurately, based on the # of linear yards required to actually produce the job) For the hourly stuff -- that would be the graphics design part. If you have a designer on staff, great, but I don't. Personally, I just farm out the design work to a local...
  8. 20' Trailer wrap

I also consider what type of job I'm facing myself with down the road when that customer comes in to have new graphics printed. I want the "easiest" removal I can get -- so much so that I follow up with customers for a rewrap when I see their vehicles around town and the laminate has started to...
  9. 20' Trailer wrap

Agreed. They probably installed the panels one at a time and struggled with some stretching. It's much better to seam everything on the table and lay the entire print in one go.
  10. 20' Trailer wrap

About 3-3.5 hours for 2 people on a job that size. The panels are printed/labeled in order, and automatic trimming with a Fotoba only takes about 10-12 minutes per 50 yard roll... so it's mostly just sliding the panels across the table and running some masking tape). I wouldn't say that we...
  11. 20' Trailer wrap

    Indeed!
  12. Small shop getting into wraps?

Fully agreed. We've been doing wraps for about 14 years, but discontinued them about a year ago. Material costs have gone up a lot (if you can even find the vinyl you need -- and good luck finding vinyl for color changes without special ordering full rolls and waiting weeks or months for...
  13. 20' Trailer wrap

Very cool design! Love it! But as far as labor goes... man, that's a long time, even with the initial prep. Our installer knocks stuff out so fast (granted, he has several decades of experience). Here's an example of him wrapping a 53' dry van -- by himself -- in just over 4 hours: (excuse...
  14. Vinyl failing on sheet metal

It's because of the powder coating, which is made from polymer resin, and it has excellent anti-stick / anti-stain properties. Combine that with a black trailer in the sun, and you'll be lucky if it has the holding power of static cling. Wrap film "might" work, but most likely you would need a...
  15. Bi-directional printing suddenly stops

FWIW I was also using Caldera when it happened.
  16. Bi-directional printing suddenly stops

This may or may not be helpful, but I had a similar thing happen on my Mutoh -- it ended up being a corrupt media profile. Deleted and recreated a new one (custom profile by the way, not from mgfr.) No problems since.
  17. Premasked striping woes

I typically lay down a 1" mask first and use that as a guide for the stripes. That way I can lift the tape and adjust as needed until I'm happy with the positioning. And for the stripes themselves, I'll use clear masking (where possible, such as flat surfaces) so I can see the edges better...
  18. 3' x 12' Acrylic sign panel for a lighted sign

Correct, the print on the laminate is exposed, but the color density makes up for some of the washout you'd otherwise get with a lot of eco-sol prints (perhaps too dense if anything, so some fading doesn't hurt it at all). It still lasts a very long time. I made my sign that way about 8 years...
  19. 3' x 12' Acrylic sign panel for a lighted sign

Use the recommended matching laminate for the 3850: https://www.orafol.com/en/americas/products/orajet-3850-translucent-cal (scroll to the bottom to see the different options) Printing on both the laminate and the translucent is my go-to method for these types of faces -- it works really well...
  20. Moving from Onyx 21 to Caldera RIP

Well damn, I guess it does! I mean, it doesn't work very well (crashes at every attempt since I started tinkering with it 30 minutes ago), but I stand corrected... they did implement contour bleed in VisualRip.
