  1. Problems with Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3

Hi all, Haven't had Internet access the past several days, so I apologize for the belated reply. Using some of the excellent advice here and controlling variables one at a time, we isolated the problem (it's not the primer) and are no longer having this problem. Thank you all!
  2. Problems with Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3

Our company creates hand-painted MDO signs. We stocked up and bought seven 5-gallon containers of Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 interior/exterior primer last March. The primer from two of the seven containers when applied to MDO (we use tack cloth to clean the MDO sheets and Wooster rollers to apply...
  3. How Long to Wait

For a hand-painted sign with vinyl lettering.
  4. How Long to Wait

How long do you let paint (latex semigloss) on a sign (MDO or marine grade plywood) dry before you're comfortable applying vinyl lettering over it. Two days? Four? A week?
  5. How do I make a stencil?

I've got to put an order in for vinyl and tape so I'll get some mask material too and give that a whirl. I think it may be my best option for this job. And thank you geb - I appreciate the offer and the help.
  6. How do I make a stencil?

Thanks for all of your help! The stencil would be used over and over (by me) and it's for an optical illusion element on a hand painted sign. I could plot it out and apply it in vinyl but it would involve intense weeding and a lot of vinyl wasted. So, I thought I'd try the stencil thing. I have...
  7. How do I make a stencil?

I've got CorelDraw Graphics Suite x5 and a Summa D75 plotter. How do I make a stencil? The stencil will be used to paint details on painted MDO. Thanks much!
  8. Software Recommendations, please

Looking for software recommendations for a hand-painted sign shop that's going to begin using vinyl mostly for lettering. Our needs, as far as we can tell, are simple. What would be the best value and most user friendly software for us (we're going to buy a Graphtec or Summa plotter).
  9. Summa or Graphtec

We're a hand-painted boutique sign company looking to add vinyl-lettering capabilities. We've narrowed our plotter choices to the Graphtec CE 5000 and Summa D75. The Summa is about $900 more ($1595 vs. $2495). From what we've read, it sounds like the Graphtec should work well. Thoughts on either...
  10. Bad MDO Boards

Thank you all so much. As a newbie, much appreciated. Two things I'd like clarified regarding sealing: Is it recommended to use wood fillers only on the voids in the edges or on the entire edges (before priming and painting the edges)? And is wood filler, not caulk, definitely the way to go? I...
  11. Bad MDO Boards

If there's a void -- we have very few of them -- we fill it with caulk (we don't use edge caps, as most of our signs have curves we cut). We completely caulk the edges, then we paint them. So far, this has worked well. Let me know if there's something more we should be doing.
  12. Bad MDO Boards

Started using MDO for signs this summer. Went through a unit of 60 1/2-inch thick 4x8 sheets without incident. Also ordered six 3/4-inch MDO boards, from the same lumber company, for a pair of customers who wanted thicker signs. The two MDO 3/4-inch boards used for one of those customers...
  13. Caulk or glue

For sealing the edges of hand-painted MDO signs is caulk or glue better? If glue, are all created equal or do any stand out?
