Recently joined the ranks of the unemployed. Believe what they say about small business being the engine of growth so here goes ... another sign shop is open! Was that the sound of job creation?

Been carving wood as a hobby for several years. Caught the sign bug in college seeing beautifully crafted signs on the Maine coast. Bought some tools and equipment to play with. I have Sign-mate with a Roland plotter and a blasting cabinet for redwood,DU, tile and stone. Vehicle graphics and banners are neat but enjoy the craftsmanship of carving, painting ... the pain of splinters and smell of paint thinner!

I'm in awe of the talent in the industry and excited to have a forum to bring my questions. Thanks in advance.

Welocme from The Nebraska. Wish we still did redwood signs, redwood has just got too expensive. HDU and cedar are what we replaced it with. In fact I even used to use redwood posts, they were such a joy to work with, easy to carve and decorate.

As long as you're willing to market and keep trying, this industry is simply amazing. We started about 2 years ago and are growing.
The Sign industry is a "noble" industry that will be around for a long, long time. Even if we all have to adapt to the internet and digital changes. Just stay in front of the curve!
