Well after 15 years of being self-employed in this business, i have accepted a position with another sign company 3 hours away. Although being self employed has its perks, I couldn't pass up the opportunity for a 9 - 5 job with good pay and benefits. At 41, I finally get my nights and weekends to myself.

Was you own business failing?

Having been on both sides I doubt I would enjoy having a boss again...and a 3 hour commute?

I can see the attraction of having a weekend again (sitting here in my robe on a sunday morning printing banners).

Good luck!

After over 30 years of self employment, I accepted a position as a designer at the biggest electric sign co. in this immediate area. My commute was nothing compared to yours, but I always heard a long commute is good for morning mental preparation and evening decompressing from the job. I was quite happy to walk away from self employment as the industry was not even remotely the same as it was when I started. Being able to leave all responsibility behind at the closing buzzer was nirvana to me. Hope you like your new position and the good outweighs the bad in your circumstance. Good luck.

Thanks guys! I'm not commuting, staying with family for the first 2 weeks while looking for a place of my own. No, the business wasn't failing, but it wasn't progressing either. Being in a small town, I felt I hit a wall as far as making more money and expanding. Maybe it was just me making excuses and feeling burned out and wanting a change. Originally, I was somewhat afraid of change, but this I believe is change for the better. Thank you again guys!

Thanks Arlo for your story, it helps alleviate some of the stress knowing that you had a positive experience with your decision :)

I've never really looked back, but I know there have been times if I made the right decsion 30 years ago. I worked for 10 years around until I met the Goddess and we went into business for ourselves in 1982. I've been offered to go elsewhere and always for good money, but luckily, I never went through with it.

Business, as well as everything else in life, has it's 'ups & downs' and sometimes it always seems easier to take a new direction and enjoy life along the way. I just tend to enjoy my life and create my own way and always smell the roses in my own back yard.

Good Luck................. and enjoy the ride

If I could find a sign place within an hour of me who needed a designer or a simple production person I would close up shop in a heartbeat.
Provided they pay on a regular basis, and pay more than minimum wage!
Good luck to you!

Hope it all works out for you. I just hired a veteran sign painter who moved down here from Massachusetts. He could not find any work up north and was forced to relocate down here to Florida because his wife found a job down here. He's all geeked up about working for me because everything I do here is new to him. So far it's a win win for both of us.

I remember leaving N.Y. after twenty five years. Starting over wasn't without some difficulties, but the payoff has been huge for me. I too was stagnated in N.Y. with no opportunities to spread my wings and soar. Down here the opportunities are endless and only limited by your imagination.

Change is good!
