also, just re-reading some of the posts - and I'm not convinced you don't have a hard drive problem. Even though it "tests" ok... failing hard drives can cause some really odd problems. Something caused that original problem, and its likely the same thing keeping the re-install from working.
Second, just because you have an up to date AV program, don't assume your safe from viruses.
if you have a second computer you can pull the drive out of this one, put it in as a slave and full scan for viruses. You might get a surprise!
