Hey, Received a check from a new customer made out to Miscellaneous Vendor.

Any idea why they may have done this and not did my business name as i told them to?

Is it even able to be deposited?

tell them it should be made to

Centre d'Accueil et de Soins Hospitaliers

or

Competitive Advantage Sign Horizons

or

Customer After Sales Help

or

Check All Silly Hoes

which they should abbreviate in all caps CASH

Most probably were filing out the first time information in their QuickBooks and catogorized you under the Misc.Vendor section and absentmindedly typed it in the pay to the order of.

If you need the money try endorsing the back of the check "misc. vendor", your company name and account number. Put it in with your other checks for deposit and watch how lax most banks are in accepting deposits.

Rather than waste time, why not just call them, laugh a little, tell them what they did and ask them to re-issue you a check ??

The way banks are today, it's gonna be a 50-50 chance of it going through.

First of all, there is no account in that name which matches your name or numbers, so you can't cash it for sure and if they let you deposit it, I'd be a little leery of it actually going through properly.

Done it many times. This is exactly why an old fashioned typewriter is so valuable. Simple add your company above the offending name. Make sure to line it up good. Works every time.

Hey bubblewrap.... that's really very bad advice. On checks, that could be a very severe offense, especially as to what the amount might be.

Who would change the amount? The check is yours. This just gets it deposited without your bank refusing it.

From http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-an-altered-check.htm

An altered check is one where some detail has been changed after it was originally written, specifically when that change has been made without the check-writer's knowledge. The legal consequences if and when this alteration is discovered depend on the prevailing jurisdiction. An altered check should not be confused with a bounced check or a crossed check.

In the United States, altered checks are covered by section 3-407 of the Uniform Commercial Code. This is a set of standard regulations regarding commercial transactions that has been adopted into the laws of all US states. Under the UCC, alteration covers both changing what has been written on a check, and adding information where the check was incomplete, for example if the amount was left blank

Maybe call them and explain the situation, and ask for some kind of documentation where they acknowledge they've given you permission to write your business name in there. Worst case scenario have them cut you a new check with all the correct info if the bank won't take it.

I should then perhaps consider charging additional for such future alterations for payments owed and mailed to me. But I'm cheap like that.

like prison time?:banghead: cmon Gino damn everything cant be a crime

You're right about that, nothing is a crime until when you're conducting business on the up and up..... but when someone is advocating doing something shady, then it easily becomes a crime.

You can turn a perfectly legitimate situation into a really bad one... and when people advise others to follow suit, it just becomes downright dumb.

Just because you or someone has never been caught doing nasties, does not automatically equate to it's legal. You just never got caught. Unless your name is 'misc vendor', why would you want to take a chance, when getting them to re-issue when it is easier, safer and looks better in the end ??

No need to get bent outta shape cause you're in the wrong and someone pointed it out. Relax, it's almost Friday night and time to kick back and do weekend things.............

Makes me wonder how many of those same checks may have been deposited into personal accounts.
