i can't imagine the city has any say in whether the store is closed or not.
it's a business for christ's sake, they can't be forced to stay in business!
however, it does seem as though the city has merit in wanting to preserve the historical aspect of the building and signage.

as for taking down the sign in the middle of the night... yeah, that's fishy alright. i doubt that was a corporate decision.
