A customer emails you a photo of their 1 year old truck door graphics that they decided to have done somewhere else because they thought you were too expensive and it looks like THIS. Especially when the trailer graphics that he had me do for him 7 years ago still look fabulous. Now he gets to pay me to redo them, so how much did he end up saving?

I wouldn't beat him up either, he came back to you when he wanted it done right, which was probably a little embarrassing for him. Now you get to swoop in and be the hero!

On a similar project right now but with a corporate identity (they paid the big bucks only to receive a stolen logo)
it's a tough lesson for clients to learn, but i think it sticks with them.

ohhhhhh hell no ............ matter of fact life brings blessings in disguise, after PA I was all shook up over my GF and Partner Adria ... fast forward to today ... I have an amazing woman 4 times what what I had in PA ....... no worries ..

It must be a trend. I had 2 today come in and do this. one was from 6 months ago and didn't want to pay for a racing stripe down the side of his rice mobile ... came back and his white econo vinyl was cracking and chipping. also had a guy who wanted a huge illustration of a dragon for his pc repair business ... didn't want to pay the art fee for custom art ... went with a shop up the road ... gave him a clipart dragon that they poorly printed on calendared vinyl without a lam ... ink was already scrapping off after only a month or two. was also told he couldn't trade mark it. never mind the fact that he paid them for the art fee and not myself who would actually make a custom piece of art for him.

That's a great attitude, and I applaud you for it.

I'm sure you've seen though, as it appears others have... They come back for one or two repair/replacements, then get cheap again.

Nope, haven't. I won't play that game and don't need to. They either get it or move on......by their own choice or mine.

After a while you come to a point where you just know who you do or don't want to work with, and you focus on the good ones, and share funny or messed-up stories about the others.

Don't be a slave to the cheap! Rather, focus on getting a great reputation for quality. It will pay off in the long run.

it's just extremely annoying to see them go elsewhere, come back for one or two jobs, then go elsewhere for a cheap job again...

you guys worry too much about loyalty. A job is a job. If this was a new customer you'd smile, tut tut about the previous job not lasting ( maybe it was made to a budget ?? ) give him a quote to fix it & be happy if you got the job. So what if hes used you before or not. Can't see Maccas complaining that you'd been to some other burger joint
