Flexi Cloud and Motherboard

If I replace the motherboard of my workstation, will the computer ID change?
I have to decide whether I shall remove the license through license manager or not.

The computer ID is often set by the serial numbers from:
MAC card,
motherboard,
hard drive.
Or a combination of the installed hardware.
Some ID's are generated by the OS serial number.
Some use a combination of the OS serial number and the software package.

All to often changing just one piece of hardware requires a new access key for software.

As for a specific software such as flexi.. I do not know anything about how they make a key...

It's rather strange with Flexi.

Last week, some of the USB ports on the motherboard came loose, so the UPS control connection was on and off.

I unplugged the UPS for a while, and plugged it back in. I, then, went back to work on Flexi and mind my own business.

After cancelling import of an AI file, Flexi crashed, and I rebooted the computer. Of course Flexi was among the first programs to run when I am logged into Windows 8 Pro.

The screen suddenly popped up with an error message from Flexi saying that "[n]o valid license can be found for this application." BAM! That was like a slap to my face.

I opened License Manager, and the computer ID appeared to be different. I thought I was screwed, because then I would have to remove the license from my SAi Cloud account manually, and that could only be done ONCE, which means if the computer ID changes again, I would have to pay for another PRO license. That's scary, to say the least.

I didn't realize the anomaly had anything to do with the USB device, so I restarted the computer a few times hoping the computer ID would revert to the original. No avail.

Fortunately (and unfortunately), the UPS started acting up again. As a result, I unplugged it, and restarted the computer. Ta da! There you go. My old computer ID came back!

How ridiculous was that? I have never had to deal with this with AutoCAD, 3DS Max or Adobe Creative Suites.

D changes again, I would have to pay for another PRO license.

If that is all they give you then I would be very leery of ever purchasing something from them again. to depend on any machine for something as expensive as this product is asking way too much in my humble opinion.

Stories like this make me somewhat glad about a program that uses some type of external security device. I would hate to have to deal with something like that on one software in particular that I run (entry level version of that software is maybe a couple hundred dollars cheaper the Flexi Pro and that's the entry level version).

All have their failings, but to have something that generates a computer ID seems to be the most constricting of them all.

Yet, if the hardware key gets damaged or lost (someone on Signs101 has lost or damaged the key in hurricane Sandy or Ike), SAi charges $250 to replace the key, or denies any such request, based on the scenario.

Never had to worry about that with other software.

I know that concern all too well too. Even that I get charged more though. This really does suck.

To me, it's all about mitigation. I can do things to protect the physical nature of the dongle, but not much we can do about motherboard stability. You can buy they best out there and unfortunately it can still take a dump quickly. Odds are against it, but still a crap shoot.

You can remove a license, or detach it, and attach it to a different computer. There are a few ways to do this.

If your software is still installed and accessible:
Start menu > Programs > SAi Production Suite > License Manager and select "Remove License From This Computer" and follow the prompts. You can then "attach" the license to a different computer.

If the software is not accessible, log into www.SAiCloud.com and click the "License Removed?" link. (If you have multiple products, first select the software you want to detach). Again, follow the prompts to attach the license to a different computer.

If the computer ID changes randomly or unexpectedly, we'd like to hear from you! Please report the issue through esupport@thinksai.com or dial 1800.229.9044.

Hi Steph,

Thanks for the reply. Actually the old motherboard died on me, and I have just replaced the motherboard. Looks like the new motherboard has no effect on Flexi, which's great.

I have previously reported the computer ID inconsistency to the support, but apparently it hasn't been rectified with build 1921.

I hope the next update will shed some light on this.
