HP Latex 670 a hoax?

Rumor has it HP was going to release a 64" roll to roll latex printer that has the capability to print white ink. Rumor is, they're dubbing it the "670" with a hefty price tag to go with it. Anyone hear any news on the release date?

I really need the white ink so badly, and if this is the case after the release I will not hesitate to buy ucjv300.

I recently visited Mimaki. Saw every machine they make. For what I do, it is not a good fit. The ink is raised on the media, and is thick. If your in the signage/wall/window graphics niche, it would a good choice. Especially with the 5 layer printing and the effects with backlit. Decent scratch resistance, but not as good as HP Latex. The UJV-100-160 prints faster than the the UCJV, but its only capable of 3 layer printing. When you purchase the machine, you have to decide which way you want to print white ink. It can either be setup to print under, or ontop. You cannot have both (UJV). Now with the UCJV, you have the option. But the UCJV is a turtle when it comes to speed. It is actually slower than the UJV. Clear option is not printed during the normal passes. It has to print the whole job, than roll back and lay clear over it. This applies to special effects as well. Rasterlink and setting up the white will probably take a lot of training and learning curve, it all seemed pretty complicated to me (I use flexi). Also, if you do print and cut, you will have to import your cut lines into the RIP with Corel or Ai. it does not have the ability to add reg marks, if your using non Mimaki cutters.

When the new HP is released (hopefully in Feb), it will be a 64" roll to roll with the white option and bulk ink option as well. I'll most likely purchase one for both of those features.

I'm also waiting for the new HP to change my printer. Right now, the mimaki ucjv is my first contender.

You can get a 54" UCJV print and cut for around $20,000 USD. But again, for what I do, its not a good choice. The new HP will definitely be much more expensive.

We do mostly backlit, murals, windows and small decals. So in my case, the printer is perfect. But I'm waiting for the HP to see what they will offer.

Seems like the Mimaki might be the better option. Although, the latex R series is capable of 5 later printing, so I am going to go out on a limb here and assume that the new HP roll to roll will have the same options, which in your case, will work very well. It will boil down to the price point. HP is probably going to come in high, which I feel will hurt them in the long run. The Mimaki pricing is really good.

How was the print quality of the UCJV compared to the grainy stuff the HP puts out due to the droplet size?

I wouldn't say the prints were "grainy" with the UCJV, but it does look "textured". I've been able to eliminate a lot of grain with my latex printers by doing a series of things, which I won't get into right now, but for what I do, the Mimaki just isn't a good fit. The LUS170 inks have a decent scratch resistance, but nothing like Latex. The only difference between LUS170 and LUS210 inks are the "stretchability" if you were using it to print vehicle wraps, then it would make sense to use the 210. Image quality is nice, but I can't get over the fact that the inks cure quite thick ontop of the substrate. And that's only printing one layer. Imagine you printed decals with white layer, cmyk layer and a clear layer, it would literally feel 3D. My customers would not like it at all. Also, the LUS inks print with a matte finish. In order to get a glossy ink effect, you have to use the clear. It would take forever and a day to print a roll with the Mimaki that way. Keep in mind, the clear doesn't go down during printing, it has to roll the job back and lay the clear after the job was printed. When your printing roll to roll daily, this printer would be a nightmare when it comes to volume.
