HP has wanted out of the consumer market for years. it's likely instead of selling off the pc and printer end of the business... it may just be spun off into a new company.

HP stocks tanked today... there stock is down to $23.
sitting on a bunch of worthless stock options... ugh!

The article makes no mention of their printers. Is that included in the PC division?

PC's are part of the PSG group (personal systems group)
Printers are part of the IPG group (imaging & printing group)

it's currently only the PSG group that's going to be spun off or sold

Compaq had decent laptops until the acquisition too.
when HP acquired Compaq, the products were not merged to create a new PC. the HP line was dropped and all HP employees connected to that line (mostly in Roseville CA) were fired on the spot. The Compaq employees remained in tack, never leaving their offices in Huston. For years within HP legacy HP employees were refereed to as "blue" and legacy Compaq employees were "red." The entire PC line was considered "red" there was no purple.

HP artificially maintained two brands, because stores like Best Buy, wanted the perception of competition their shelves, the top three being Compaq, HP and Sony.
