Husband broke his back

Hello, my husband Michael severed his lumbar and damaged his spinal column. He nor anyone knows how it happened. He woke up last Saturday and was fine but couple hours later screamed for help.
Went to local hospital they took scans and immediately wanted to know what we did, but it is all a mystery.

he was transported and hour away to bigger facility to do surgery right away. He can't really feel his legs much and is in terrible pain.

he asked I post a message to his friends here.

He is generally bread winner so he's really depressed about everything and it will be a long road ahead. He runs his sign company alone so there's a ton for me to figure out for him.

take care and all advice is appreciated.

Sorry to hear that. I have had 4 back surgeries, and after the 3rd in 2013, I woke up and couldn't feel from my waste down. Most of it came back over the course of the following year, but from my knee down on my left leg is still mostly numb, and I can't move my left foot. Backs are touchy.

With that said, we are on the coast of NC, but always here to help if we can.

Hope he gets better soon.

You are going to need to find an experienced helper. Honest as well. That may be tough to find.

I am sorry for what you are going through, I hope he has a rapid recovery. Once he is stable,
he may be able to do the computer work from his bed. So you will need to learn how to do
everything else. That may be asking too much if you have no experience.

I think right now you need to find out what orders are in currently, the deadlines, if there was a
deposit, etc. You certainly don't need a bunch of clients demanding refunds because of missed
deadlines.

Let us know how you are doing.

Wow, so sorry to hear this.

Anything we can do to help, please PM us.

I hurt my back back in the early 80's. Was in a body brace for 11 months. I'm fine now, but it was rough. Luckily, I had good friends to help paint and get work out.

sorry to hear the bad news but one good thing is they have come a long way with back surgeries. hope everything works out. it will be a long bumpy road but stay positive.
as everyone else said if you have any questions or need help figuring anything out we are all here.
had back surgery 15 months ago and not 100% but way better then i was. there where days i had to walk with crutches because i couldn't hold my self up after the surgery i don't have those issues
and can work but have to watch what i do.
once you find a dr you are comfortable with make sure you do what they tell you, follow instructions, do therapy otherwise you can end up back where you started.

Hope he can have a speedy recovery. Twenty two years ago I crushed my T12 vertebra in a wind tunnel accident (free fall simulator). Didn't have health insurance so I waited three days before my buddy forced me to get xrays in the hospital. I wanted to believe I had pulled a muscle but was damn near parallelized and couldn't move from the floor of my house. Dr. gave me the bad news and wanted me to stay in the hospital but I said no. I could lay in my own bed at home instead of a $1,000 a day hospital bed that I couldn't afford. I was supposed to see a specialist but he was an hour late for my appointment and I got pissed off and walked out of the office.

I told my ride at the time to take me back to my shop and from that day on worked out of a wheelchair and used crutches until I eventually was able to walk. Took about six months but I eventually regained full mobility. My back still hurts all the time after all these years but I just live with it and try to ignore the pain. I refuse to have any kind of back surgery having heard nightmare stories and don't think it could help anyway.

Anyway, I hope his injury isn't severe. Best of luck.

This most definitely will hit you guys hard. Sorry to hear this as its the pits running a business as a one person shop and having
something like this happen. And its tough trying to find someone to walk in and do everything he does.

Keep moving forward, stay focused, find out what needs to be done, he can help guide you thru this even though he can't
physically do anything. If you're lucky enough to have close family and friends ... ask for help. If he has close business relationships
with other sign people or installers, ask for help. You may be able to sub some of your work out, just be careful "who" you sub it to.
May not be the best but its an option.

Yes there are businesses on this forum who could help, but not be close enough to steal you customers.

There are also large businesses that wholesale signs to sign businesses. This may also be a good option to
meet deadlines and still make a few bucks.

Who knows, you could turn out to be a major earner here, learning the business and subing out the work
to other companies.

Terrible news, best wishes for a speedy recovery for you husband.

It'll be hard to trust a bunch of anonymous strangers on the internet but there are good people here that may be able to help in some way.
Don't hesitate to ask.

If you ever have any questions ask them here. We will help to the best of our ability. If it's an issue of not being able to produce. I would talk to any close sign friends you have and sub the work out for now. Tell them about your situation. I'm sure the would be glad to give you a percentage of the profit for the business you send them. That way you can do whatever you need to do to help him. And still have at least a little something coming in.

Update

Thank you for all the responses.
if anyone is interested or able, Mike's brother has setup a fund page for what will be an unpredictable amount of bills over the next weeks.

I am humbled to post this here, but I know we need the help now.

the business side of things just has to hold for now because the jobs were too complex for me to figure out, and time sensitive.

mike is able to get in a wheelchair, so we are grateful for that progress only a week after surgery. However not much feeling in legs at this point.

im trying to go back to work full time, and trying to look at all disability for him. It's just a lot to handle.

thanks again
