I'd go the ratchet strap route. You could even wrap the straps with garland to make them less of an eye-sore.

Okay-

if you are interested - the banners are up! they are now 6 feet wide by 20 feet high and we went with a hybrid install consisting of a 3" heavy steel rod in top pole pocket with eye hooks drilled into pole and straps placed around top of column that are barely viable. The remaining adhesion points were done with white metal strapping with white padding underneath and looped into grommets in the fabric which ended up being a mesh fabric. once my customer send photos i will post so you can see.
