I was hand lettering a boat transom and a bystander was watching me from behind. He noticed my brush carousel and asked about my special lettering quills and where did I get them from.
I explained that one of the skills of a professional sign painter was making his own brushes from scratch. I with a straight face, looked in square in the eye and told him that every spring I shave the hair off the back of my goat and then carefully fashion my brushes with it. After trimming the hair to length, I then wire tie them to the feral and handles and this is why the paint flows so smoothly from the brush. He said he was really impressed that I had this skill along with my artistic ability.
Another time while lettering the doors on a truck, a spectator was asking questions about my pounce pattern and was curious as to how I made all the holes for it. I explained that the night before I stayed up until 3:00 am making it by hand with a sharp sewing needle and the spacing was critical. I then told him they are quite time consuming to make and this was why it cost so much to have a truck lettered. He too was impressed with my unique skill set.
But the best one ever was when I convinced a first time tandem skydiver that he was required to wear a condom on his first jump in case he had an accidental orgasm in freefall. Yep, he bought the story hook, sinker, and line.
