You can't see the Mac mini and the G5 was hiding behind the other bookshelf by a 8500 PowerMac. The tower is a Dell that runs Windows 98 and a Sony that used to run XP till it fried used to sit by the 8500.

In Illustrator, on the layers pallet there is a drop down. It says, "Paste remembers layers". Select that and give it a try.

That will paste the objects on their original layers not new ones.
