Looking for top to light table build

I am working on building a light table for layering vinyl and I am looking for options on what to make the top from. Would anyone recommend glass or acrylic and what do you do to diffuse the light?

Glass--- 1/4" plate here--- half my table is cut out (4x4) with lights installed

Ours is a 2' x 4' light fixture recessed into a 30" x 10' vinyl cutting/weeding/trans masking bench covered with a cutting mat. Works great for layered stuff . . . we mostly use it to cut reg marks.
