So you're saying when you walked in to get your kid, and your kid said hi dad, you could have been anyone?

Actually my kid said nothing. The point was I was able to walk into a school completely unsupervised and wander around a campus for over 5 minutes unchallenged and unescorted and leave with a child without anyone knowing who I was or what I was doing there.

The original interview was scheduled five hours before the Shooting in Atlanta and I postponed it till today in order to meet a client, not knowing that the tragedy in Atlanta was going to occur. Which emphasizes why schools need to tighten up basic security.

I bet no one can wander through your shop without you or someone challenging them as to why they are there. Either by greeting them or other means based on the situation.

It takes a special kind of attention monger to go to pick up their kid from school and then call up a news agency to make up a story. Sheesh dude take it down a notch or 3.

When you were walking around the school did you hear locks clicking on the doors and people peering through closed shades at you. Your eyes are too close together, you are a scary looking dude, they were afraid to confront you.

Just curious....why the news? Did you raise hell with the school system first if it bothered you or did you just decide to be a media whore?

Being a grandpa is more fun than working
When I was in elementary school in the early 70s, our school had four doors...each facing all four directions. When I got to middle school, we had dozens of doors, and likewise with high school. No AC in those days, so each class had open windows and open doors...lots of them. Those days are gone for good. In 2006, I taught shop class and always enjoyed having the large overhead doors open...and the students also liked the "open" feel of the shop. My admin said the door had to come down and after the opening bell, the school was basically on lockdown. It's a shame when the inmates at the local prison have "play time" outdoors most all day and the kids have to stay locked up. Who's really the prisoner here?

So Addie,
now that they have your face and name from the News should you expect a full cavity search each time you need to enter the school?

Actually I did address the issue with the school first. They were sent a nicely worded letter explaining my concerns. They didn't respond. I am well known over at the station as my kids do the morning news show regularly. So, I sent them an email explaining the situation. I brought up the issue as we have had a few incidents of violence in schools last year and with the last year's school shootings. I didn't believe basic precautions would be out of line. I wasn't asking the school to install a multi-million dollar security system. I was simply asking them to have a staff member keep an eye on the door and be aware of those who enter and exit. Maybe this will wake someone up to take some basic precautions regarding the safety of students.

This is not my first run in with the school board here. I have been on their case for many of their antics over the years. 2 years ago I was interviewed by the same station over a safety issue of having kids cross a 4 lane highway in the dark to catch a bus. A cost saving maneuver by the local school board to not have buses make left turns or u-turns that year thereby making bus stops further away and on busy roads than in previous years when they were inside neighborhood roads with less traffic.

im a father of two. so if you were truely concerned about a hole in the security, i can get 100% on board with that. kudos.

calling a news station to build a fear mongering story on the heels of a recent news piece is sad.

posting it on here to get even more attention regarding the attention you were hoping to get on tv is lame.

real people are involved in situations like this. aka the people that work at that school and had to go on camera to field questions and clean up your mess.

they have kids too and probably take their jobs and careers pretty serious.

if you were that concerned and truely recognized a sincere security threat, you should have taken it up with that same staff rather then call a news station to make a story out of one that didnt exist to further your needs/agenda.

major fail on all parts of the equation.

Pisses me off to no end. A parent walking around in a school to pick up his kid without checking in with the office. Violated every rule in the book. Common courtesy would dictate at least a cursory stop at the front desk. But no, you have to wander around in a school without a challenge. Maybe just maybe one or another recognized you just a little? Then you write a letter to the school and get no response. How do you know there was no response.

Maybe the school admin was quietly taking care of business while trying to keep down any possible hysteria. But you in your foot stamping unfulfilled middle aged crisis having a sissy tantrum over not getting any attention alerted the entire region via the news agency about some school supposedly without any security. Wouldn't you at least think that would draw a nutbag? Yes, your action could have created a copy cat who would like to test the system and wander around a school of little kids. Way to go.. You are not a hero. A hero would go to the school admins to work up a plan on how to make the school secure.

But no, you have to stamp your feet to get your way. Let me call a whaaaambulance. Got some cheese with that whine?

You just had to make a frigging scene with the news media. Friggin t1tty baby whining about how you were able to get your kid. You should work in a junk yard because you sure make enough of it.

Are you just another Malcontent looking for some fame?

the local school board to not have buses make left turns or u-turns that year thereby making bus stops further away
Avoiding left turns is one of the seven rules of defensive driving. Then avoid u turns and backing and then parking in the getaway position are a few more. But, lets examine some facts. UPS and the like run their routes with no left turns if at all possible. But i guess you never had a professional driving course. Or you would know that. You talk about safety. But your complaint about left turns is just about as lame as it gets. A left turn or a u turn is about the single highest cause of buss accidents. That's right... left turns and u turns. The only maneuver higher in danger is backing. So what do you want. Safety or a convenient shorter bus ride?

Why not get a little more educated about your uninformed facts before going off half cocked.
