I am on the board to change Nebraska City's Sign codes. Pole Signs and Digital reader Boards are going to be the main topic I am sure. Any and all input is a plus to help us out. What about all the garage sale signs everywhere left for WEEKS at a time?

The current codes outlaw pole signs, BUT NONE of the City's utilities are burried so the argument of beautifing the sky is moot! And there is confusion on how existibg pole signs can be re-faced. In fact McDonald's was even force to take down their pole sign during their remodeling and are stuck with a monument sign 50' up in their parking lot.

We meet Tuesday, any thoughts would be great!

BTW I will NOT be drinking before the meeting FYI..LOL

I'd skip the pole signs and see if you can pass codes to allow more pole dancing!

I guess get out and talk to the community and business sectors and see what issues people have on this. Make it easier for businesses to get the word out but also tighten up the standards so it does not look like a mess on main street.
We have no controls here and the beer distributors have at least 70 or 80% of the total island wide visible wall/fence space covered in liquor ads. It's out of control and sooner or later they are going to put the hammer down and outlaw all of it.

I have talked to NO no person who was in favor of outlawing pole signs who was in business.

Require that all them Garbage Sale signs have an address on them or they will be promptly removed by a city official and the responsible party be fined. You could git one of you baby mommas a job for the city to do the removal. Think of the plus to that....Beautify the poles and lower your Palimony payment all at once.
No drinking before the meeting? Damn.....rough meeting! Oh Well, somebodies gotta be sober this time around when writing sensible codes.

Our city tried the same thing. I spoke in front of the panel and argued that it was kicking the small businesses that were leasing locations that had existing poles. My other and probably more compelling to them was a matter of safety; If you stop at a stop sign to turn right and look for oncoming traffic you can still see it coming even if there are a multitude of pole signs, signs with wider bases block much more view. There are much worse eye sores out there than a well done pole sign. The signs killing this town are the home made or non professional signs. I am in no way against a self made sign, as long as you can't tell it is a self made sign, and those seem few and far between.

Typically the sign ordinance will include "sight triangle" restrictions that specify a sign either cannot be installed within a general triangular area (ie: the area formed by measuring 45' x 45' along the curbs of an intersection) or if it is installed within that area it is restricted to a maximum height or must maintain a minimum clearance. Your code may have that verbiage, so arguing that a monument sign is unsafe may quickly be shot down.

If their reason for not allowing pole signs is "beautification", they have a point. If you drive through an area that has strict setback and height restrictions, it makes for a much more aesthetically pleasing area. If they made McDonald's install a monument sign with a 50' setback, it sounds like you live in that kind of an area. From a resident's point of view, it's a good thing. From a business owner's point of view, it's not good at all.

So my line of argument would be more geared toward: a stricter sign ordinance = decreased sales = decreased tax revenue for the city. Of course you're going to have to give supporting argument.

Hope that helps a little.

Research sign ordinances from other similar municipalities, compare them and come up with some reasonable regulations for your town. You can find that information at many zoning departments in municipal websites. Research, facts and proper preparation will be key factors in creating or changing sign regulations.

My idea for you.

Kick the city planners out of the meeting. 99.99% have never ran an actual business and are the root of most bureaucratic problems.

If you have the LED pole signs that change every few seconds ... require an automatic dimmer system for the evenings and nights.

Most are made for daylight and are blindingly bright at night!

GB2 is right. Get on the internet and research other municipalities codes and pick and choose from their hard work. No need to re-invent the wheel when thousands of dollars have been spent by them and their P&Z departments researching and checking legality of ordinances.
