Need a cheap, small laptop to run CorelX4 for new laser cutter

I need a cheap computer to run my new laser cutter. I'm thinking some sort of netbook or laptop. That way I can drag it to and from my office computer to load cut files as needed.

I use Corel X4 with a plugin from the laser cutter manufacturer. Nothing will be designed on the shop computer... it just needs to be able to open files etc. A way to install Corel will be needed. I'm not sure how you would do that without a disc drive. Everything seems to be windows 8 now. I'm not sure if X4 or the plugin will work in windows 8.

Any suggestions?

USB Optical drive. That's what I used to get Wilcom and CS6 on my Wacom tablet.

You could see if it would be possible to just copy the DVD onto a jump drive. The program might be old enough to do that with, some of the newer ones don't take too kindly to that method. Those would be the only two methods that I know about.

Look on eBay and find an old IBM Thinkpad. Small, light, built like tanks and powerful enough to run x4.
You can find them on eBay for less than 100. Some even lower than that. I have one new in 07'. Added some memory and a new battery and it runs like a champ (albeit with XP).

Good idea. There is no super big rush because the machine will cut from files on a usb stick. I did discover that there is a service pacK (SP2) for X4 that supposedly makes it compatible with windows 8.

Don't know what kinds of DATA cable is used on those lasers.
However, FYI that some lap tops with printer ports do not use standard voltages. Standard is 5 volts but many lappys run printer ports on 3 volts. Not a problem with printers. But can be a problem with cnc driven machines.
