New Orleans or bust!

We're headed to New Orleans for the holiday (the only time we can really get away). Thought it would be cool to visit a fellow Signs101'r. In the past we've gone through GA, VA and NC and admired nice signs and wondered who was responsible for them. After joining here I've actually met some of those sign people. Very cool! So, I checked out the registry and don't see anyone listed in LA at all. Anyone out there wanna say "hi" or give us some sites-to-see suggestions?

My wife and I are going in October for our anniversary. I had some friends who used to live there - but I only went once during Mardi Gras, and I hated it. She has promised me I will love it this time around.

The parts I did like were.. Cafe DuMonde is a must - beignets right by the french quarter. There's a place called the flying burrito on magazine street that's a very cool area, with little shops, and the food at the burrito is like Moe's - except that it's good, and on steroids.

We're also going to go to Harrah's casino, and ride the street car on St. Charles. Another thing I am really looking forward to is the WW2 museum there - I am a bit of a history nut though.. But it's supposed to be right up there with the Smithsonian museums. The man who designed and made the Higgins boat that made the D-day invasion possible was from New Orleans, so it's there.

Have a great trip!

New Orleans has a lot of nice places to go to but....a lot of dangerous parts of town also. When I went to SGIA last fall, the motels near the convention center which is five or six blocks from the French Quarter advised against walking there after dark unless you are with a large group.
If you can find a Copelands Cheesecake Bistro check it out, awesome food and dessert.
I think on nola.com you can download a map showing the locations of murders and violent crime, will give you an idea of neighborhoods to avoid.

Hola from Nawlins! When are you going to be here, and for how long? There's a bunch of great restaurants (naturally), and many are outside of the Quarter (most are touristy with okay food and inflated prices). You would probably get a kick out of Parkway Bakery & Tavern, an amazing place for po-boys (get the roast beef)-- they have a ton of old signs hanging everywhere. With the weather so pleasant, you should get on the streetcar at Carollton & Claiborne and ride it downtown and back -- it goes down St. Charles and passes in front of Tulane University and Audubon park. Further down the line on St. Charles the car passes in front of The Avenue Pub, a great bar with many beers on tap, some hand pulled selections, and truffle fries. If you are looking for an extra special date night dinner, I would go to Lilette on Magazine street and order just from the appetizer menu -- be sure to order the crab claws in passion fruit butter; outrageously good! Music-wise, Frenchmen Street has a bunch of bars near the Old U.S. Mint that sport a variety of genres (jazz, rock, latin). Depending on when you are in town, we might could meet you for a beer somewhere. Cheers!

OMG you guys RAWK! I'm even more excited, now!

@ Pete: My son and hubby are major history geeks. thanks!

@ Cajun: unclear on where not to walk... by convention center? French Quarters ok, right? I'm going to have to diet from now 'til then to try that cheesecake!

@ Garismo: Should get there night before Thanksgiving and leave Sunday. So turkey at your house?! rofl I plan the trips (hubby's too adventurous for my taste) I can't wait to map all these places and make up an itinerary! Would love to meet up. I'll be in touch.

@ Maniac: Cut me some slack! 4 days and 4 nights a year?! and do I need it!!!

@ Auto: I'm sure both stories would be quite entertaining ;)

Not really Dave... we talked to a lot of locals, we always do when we visit other places and most said, it is pretty much as it was in most of the areas we were seeing. Now, those were not sign people, so it's possible they hadn't noticed the same things we were noticing and we do come from the happiest place on earth, so we may be a bit jaded. LOL I loved it all though... as a sign person though, it's like i just wanted to hug them and say, ok, now let's get some sign issues taken care of.

And please don't take that as being non-sympathetic. We've dealt with our share of hurricanes too. they've had more than their share, i know.
