its another too little too late scenerio..as my external HDD with 4 computers worth and 6 years of files became unresponsive. blah. if i ever REALLY need anything from it i think i could send it and have it looked at.

i googled for 15 mins and read a couple reviews and went with crashplan.

seems pretty awesome $60/yr

im sure most of you guys already do them but wanted to bring it up and say its cheap and easy...

Any Canadian owned and located companies doing online backup?

I read this:

"keep in mind that even if your data are stored on Canadian soil, if the service provider is not a Canadian company, your data may still be subject to foreign privacy laws"

I would like to recommend a very close friend's business for this service: gorillabackups.com
He has been a data recovery specialist and computer forensics investigator for MANY years, and started his own off-sitebackup program a few years back.

Sure, you can get cheaper, but if you ever need support you are talking directly to the owner/developer and things get taken care of right away. (like over-nighting an external drive to you - you're not going to get multiple terabytes of data restored quickly through the internet) We have just under 5TB of data here that has a local and offsite backup that he manages for us.

Gnatt, he can restore that data also if you think you might need it; do it as soon as possible before the drive gets worse.

When he first came here we had local backups on all of our machines and a daily offsite backup, and we also had a "Drobo" box that our files were stored on. Every local backup drive AND the nightly offsite backup drive were ALL bad and weren't warning us. The Drobo also had 2 bad hard drives so it wasn't really backing itself up either... We now have a huge (local) NAS box and the nightly offsite backup to GorillaMaker.

google drive is free.
up to about 30 accounts.

Google keeps copies of everything they get their digital hands on. I want some sort of privacy...

In Canada if we don't use a US or off shore based company, ie a Canadian company on Canadian soil
we can expect some privacy... maybe?

Privacy? You want Privacy? The only way to get privacy is to use a VPN with tunneling to a in house server.
As for copy of every thing..
All of them do.. Yes, all of them. There is no privacy in the net. Nowhere. Everything moving in packets across the net is open for view encrypted or otherwise. Its time every one becomes aware of that and accepts it as fact. Even typing into a window then deleting it before hitting the submit key is out there for the great skynet.. That is right you type something into a text window and it is already at the server and stored. Many IT pro's do not evne know that or will admit it..

Every thing is findable. Just start using TOR and see for yourself.

For Canadians, here is a list of backup providers. If you look at the list, you will see a check mark to show if they are in Canada. These
server companies apparently keep your data safe according to Canadian privacy laws.

The different Canadian backup providers:
