customer needs a new sign/plaque for outdoor use.
is there a similar material to the wooden plaque board that will hold up outside?
or can i just put clear on a new wood plaque (if so what would you recommend)?

Depending on the climate or how much direct sun it gets I would stay away from stained wood with clear...it usually fails within a couple years

Maybe do a faux wood on signfoam or printed wood background?

If you're gonna print the copy and logo area out, I'd use a piece of oak, sand it real good, stain it the color you/they want and clear it with maybe 2 coats, apply the print and then apply maybe 6 or 8 more clears, with light sanding in between coats.

edit : or Mahogany

mahogany will work very well, no matter what you use for a clear finish

*it will always be a maintenance issue. i always tell my customers to drive by

* any marina in the spring and look at all the sanding and clear coating*

* that is being done.. *

I do outdoor wood plates like this. I use a mahogany wood panel the print the information on an aluminum blank an att it to the wood. Can you just laminate a new aluminum panel over the existing panel?
