Thank you again. I signed up on the distributor central website and have already gotten my login (so fast!) I'm checking out the stuff right now, its a bit overwhelming!
We aren't planning on initially offering everything under the rainbow. My goal is to get a few standard items like a single pen, and say "we can order THIS pen for you for $xx." I've found limiting choices on something with a small profit margin is the way to go. If I can find the best pen at the best price, why do I need to offer 200 other sub-par versions? Who doesn't like a clicky pen?
On pens I would offer the following lines, Shepenco, Hub and/or Sweda. All three will offer you a sample case. The cases contain a sampling of pens and pencils across the price range. Makes selling so much easier as someone can touch and feel and you don't have to deal with thousands just tell someone these are the pens we offer pick the one you like best and go from there. If they don't like any of them move on.
Sweda, Crown Products, & Megafast offer some decent versatile lines that you can sell easily and not have to worry about offering too much. I used to just go to those guys first then search for a better price using the database on DC.
If you can get a custom branding job with a good budget that is when you put on some serious research hours & make some real money. I used to have a few radio stations that were spending $25,000 a year each on promo items.
