Specialty Vinyl

Hi all..

I have a client that needs a quote on lettering on the wall of their restuarant. They have painted the wall with "Chalkboard Paint". I have not had ant experience with this paint and just wondering if anyone out there has? I just need to find out what vinyl I should use. I use Oracal 651 for most everything.

normal vinyl should stick to chalkboard paint without any issues, removing it may be another story as it may take the paint off unless you use a vinyl that is made for walls, such as 631

651 should work but you could just tell them because they used a specialty paint you have to test the vinyl out to make sure it sticks. then just grab some random letters you have and check it out.

I don't know that chalkboard paint is flat isn't it? I have had a terrible time with 651 on flat walls. Is there any texture to it?

I had a racecar painted "rattle can flat black" couldnt get vinyl yo stick to it.

that chaulkboard paint may be hard to stick too.....think about a alum trailer were its got that chaulky feeling to it.....clean the crap out if it

Well, here I go again.

From what I've been told..... chalkboards are no longer acceptable in a food environment, due to the powder that can fall into food whether it be at a grocery store, farmer's market stand or an eating establishment.

Putting vinyl on it won't be a problem, but if this is some kind of menu or special board inside. it won't fly.

I also agree, applying almost any vinyl to flat paint practically never works...... anyway, not for a long period of time.

Make sure that the wall was painted at least 10 days before you apply the vinyl. I forget why, something with the gasses in the paint.

631 is removable and might be prone to pealing. The 651 is your best bet IMO.

I have been in the biz for just over 2 years and so far the 651 has held up really well for everything. I have done several 4x8 outdoor signs as well as other sizes, and a ton of vehicles and so far no issues.

I do have one issue, but I am in the middle of trying to find the answer to it with Home Depot. I have been using Behr Ultra Premium Plus and until Home Depot changed their mixing stations I have had zero problems. Now I have 2 signs that nothing will stick to and the only thing that has changed is the mixing stations at Home Depot. So I am working with them and Behr to figure this out.

Try Zinsser's Bullseye 123 in place of Behr paint. You should be able to get it at homedepot.

Yes it is.

Zinsser's Bullseye 123???? NO-NO-NO... That product is a stain blocking primer, not a paint or topcoat although it might very well be tintable. I am not even sure that it is rated for outdoor use though it well could be.

Chalkboard paint is almost flat but not quite, and it kind of has a texture.
I'd hand-letter it, it takes Ronan lettering enamels beautifully.
