I know each typeface is going to have variables but it's fairly accurate with most of mine for some lucky reason. I just checked a job I'm working on right now with the font "STENCIL" and 72pts is about 3/4", 100pts is exactly 1" . I always use the screen ruler and drag lines down to double check as you suggested as that's fast and easy too

the point (ha) is that while 6 picas=72 points=1 inch, it's a rare situation when 72 points = 1 inch of type.
I've just had better results when I use <as a starting point> 100pts=1 inch for signage typefaces. I think we just beat this to death... again.
