Using Paypal for CC processing

Greetings!

For those of you who use Paypal to process credit card purchases in your shop (not online purchases, but those where the cardholder is present) what procedure do you follow?

I'm actually asking this wearing a non-signperson hat - I am involved with our local animal shelter and occasionally have a need to accept credit card payments. The shelter staff are unsure as to the best practice here, so any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone know, is it required for the customer to have an email address to use Paypal?

Thanks in advance.

You have multiple options, pay does offer a standard merchant account plans. However, they cost monthly fees.

When I have someone that just wants to hand me their card. I usually send the invoice to my email. Then when you click the link you get the option of logging in with paypal or just paying by credit card.

I just pick the pay by credit card option and fill out the form or have them fill out the form. At the end of the form you can put your email address or theirs. I usually put their email in so they get emailed a copy of the receipt. If they don't have one I put mine and then its going to prompt you again to either login or continue without logging in. (if the email is associated with a paypal account or if the credit card is) just choose continue without logging in and it will process the payment. Then just print their receipt.

Hope this helps.

You should look into "Ituit", they will send you a mobile phone and computer credit card swiper for free, and you can accept credit cards right from your mobile phone and the rates are cheap and no monthly charges.

You can set up a payment button in Paypal where they have to enter the CC# and the price without setting up a Paypal account. You have to generate the button, then you save it in an html file to your harddrive and open it when someone wants to run a CC. Click on it and it will take you to PayPal screen where you enter the card info and the amount. I don't think you have to enter an email address, but I usually did so the receipt came immediately to my computer and I printed it out for them.

9.99 a month and you can also accept payments online. We use it too and there hasen't been a merchant service yet to beat their rates. Been using quick books plus their intuit merchant account for 6 years. We also have several iPhone swipers that we can use out at job sites to receive payment.

just cancelled intuit for a paypal/square setup- square is free, no minimums, unlimited readers, 2.75% fees- that's it. no monthly fee or cancellation fee either.

Why? Intuit is 1.5% and

intuit is 2.5%+ fee for keyed, which is 99% of what we do. Add on 40$/mo in minimums/fees- not worth it.

forgot to add- they either have a problem or just a problem with my bank- takes 3-5 days to fund. square takes 12-24 hours, paypal is instant enough at 24-48 or immediate with my paypal debit card.

What bank account did you use?

NJ-
You were getting jacked. There's more to it with intuit.
We get 1.3% qualified 1.9% non-qualified 2.3% non keyed and 24 hour deposits with intuit.
It's relative to volume, history and chargebacks. You can call and negotiate too... Tell them your getting better rates elsewhere and they will adjust.

i called, the rep was rude, i'm not going to deal with it... not enough time in the day. we've already switched and are 100% happy.

same thing goes for all of our vendors- we recently switched vinyl vendors to a more expensive, smaller outfit... their customer service surpasses all other companies we've dealt with and I'm willing to pay for it.

+1 for Square. For the animal shelter that's probably the best bet. I think were going to switch to PayPal here soon from our current processor, but we probably do alot more than the Animal Shelter. Square is a really good, easy to use option with no fees anywhere. Just about everyone else charges some type of fee here and there which on low volume will put them at a higher overall rate that SquareUp.com.

Thanks for all the input - as mentioned, being in Canada means some options aren't yet available to us. For the volume we do by CC, I think we'll just stick with Paypal until things change. We just can't justify monthly fees.

It looks like square is 3.5% for keyed in transactions.
