I just replaced the print head and turned on the printer.
It initilized and then the the lights start flashing and it shows an error message. E085Err Head Heat

Anyone have an idea on this one?

Could you have reversed the cables to the heads? Double check and make sure that all of the cables are inserted correctly.

Big ooops! That is exactly what I did.

I had also purchased new cables, and didn't put the correct bends in them, and I got them on in reverse.

In doing this mistake, does anyone have experience to know exactly what damage this causes?
If it's the main board, can it be repaired?

Thanks very much for the help.

There probably wasn't any damage. The printer cuts the power once it detects something is wrong. Once the cables are back in correctly everything should work.

Inserting the cable with reverse pinouts can easily damage the mainboard.

Chris,

When I first had it all back together, I received a cable error. I put the old cables back on (with the right bends, so the cable ends were at the correct locations).
Then it showed the "E085Err Head Heat" error.
I put my old print head back on... no errors.

Now I'm not sure if I messed up the new print head, or if the new one isn't compatible with my printer.

The new print head came looking the same except the manifold is thicker. The company that I got it from said that the 1614 has a thinner manifold (like mine), but my 1604 should use the thicker one like what they sent. They said I could switch manifolds to make it fit in my machine.

The tag on my machine reads VJ-1604A. I'm not sure if the "A" at the end makes a difference or not.

I'm including a pic of the old and new printheads. The new one is on the right.

Thanks,
Paul

So Panett Signs, were you able to change the VJ-1604A printer head successfully?

I am also thinking of changing the printer head as well to gold plated version. From macmedia.com, unlike OEM heads with a black nozzle plate, they have a gold anti-clog coating to minimize nozzle clogging for longer head life.

I had a little issue. I ordered the print head for my 1604, and it turns out that my machine uses the newer print head that is used on the 1614.
So I've now ordered the correct one, and hope to have it on sometime next week.

Don't know if you've dealt with MacMedia before. That's who I'm dealing with and I highly recommend them. Kent has been VERY helpful.

Just FYI the VJ1204, 1204AS, 1604, 1614, and 1608 are listed as having the same printhead replacement part from Mutoh.

We have only seen one High Heat error, replaced the printhead and it was resolved. I would guess you got a factory defective replacement head or you shorted the head installing it.

You got the wrong head brother.. That won't work or fit properly on your VJ...

The VJ-1204, 1304, 1604, 1614, and 1608 all use the same head. I saw the picture that was posted in the other thread and the problem you are having is you were sent the wrong print head.

Hello Paul:

Mutoh VJ series have many style 1204/ 1604/ 1614/ 1618...
Most of them use different printer head.

Your printer problem is use a wrong printer head.
You say "The new print head came looking the same except the manifold is thicker. The company that I got it from said that the 1614 has a thinner manifold (like mine), but my 1604 should use the thicker one like what they sent. They said I could switch manifolds to make it fit in my machine."
It is the reason of your problem. The printer head main difference of different Mutoh VJ printer is manifold. Printer heads have to use the correct manifold, or they can not set on printer well.

Good luck.
