Give you the short and dirty.

Worked for my parents for the last 13 years in the sign buss.. Had enough not with the buss but with working for them. So I quit, got a job working in the Oil Patch doing something completely different at 3x the $$. On my flight home one Xmas eve I get a text from my boss.. Oh look I'm laid off...


Now what to do..

Was you working in the bakken shale? My mother in law gets oil well money from that in North dakota, she said the next few months her checks will be small as they are cutting back because of oil prices being so low.

I wish you luck in your next endeavor, whatever it may be.

Take some time and look at the long-term. You stand at a fork in the road. And while it looks like nothing but a challenge, it may just may be the opportunity you've been looking for.

Do a quick google search on the words "life plan".

Essentially, it's a "where are you now?...where do you want to go?" approach to life. It's no easy task to make this plan, but since you're at a prime spot in life to do so, I say go for it.

You wouldn't believe the number of people who are contented to stay in the deepest of ruts, simply because it's more comfortable to stay there...rather than put fort the effort to break out.

I'm currently in my third career choice in life. Each new change has been nothing short of hard work and major planning. Be assured, there will be challenges, but doing absolutely nothing will get you nowhere.

I've attached a photo of what it will look like.

With 13 years in the sign business with your parents you should have learned much about the business. Do you have the money and the desire to start a new business? If so go for it. If not, find another job. Or go back home and work for Mom and Dad another 13 years until something better comes along.

Grew up working for my parents in my Dads sign shop. I can tell you to the foot, the spot where I stood when I told Dad that I would NOT work in the sign business for the rest of my life. At one point I also had had enough of working with family (nearly came to blows), walked out and go hired by another shop. Before I spent my first day at the other shop we got back together. Now I'm officially old and decrepit...

Decide if you like the sign game - it can be addictive. Maybe you should go back and talk it over with Mom and Dad. Maybe you can work out an arrangement where you run things for a while, or at least have a say in how things go. Maybe you can move to the next town over and start your own shop. Maybe you can go into computer programming, become a travel agent, sell time shares... Way too many choices to do something like this on a whim. Take you time, think of what you want to do. I'd bet that Mom & Dad would gladly take you on again, but perhaps you should set a time limit. Six months to a year should be enough to figure things out.

In any case the best you can get from this place (or any other site) are things to think about.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Working with family in any business is always hard. If it didn't work the first time, it probably wont work again. If you want to maintain a healthy relationship with your family it may be best for you to search for work elsewhere.

One thing I've learned over the years is be willing to move to wherever the jobs are.

Or.....
If you liked the oil field work get into a tech school and learn pipe welding. 6G cert in the fields will make fat bank. Truth is, 6G cert just about anywhere will make fat bank.

Place not far from me built a new shop. All indoor work welding process piping. Starting wages are $60 to $80 thousand plus benefits. No mud, no rain, no freezing cold.

If I was much younger I'd be camping out on their door until I got hired.(used to weld for a living)

What's a buss? Can you drive one?

I'm kidding... I like idea of going back up to the oil fields and doing decal work. There's alot of safety signage that needs to stay up to date. Get good at recognizing when a safety sign isn't in the right spot or out of date.

It's also a way to "Camp out" waiting for one of them to hire you back if that's what you really want to do.
