What's this................................. ??

Here's one I've never encountered before.

For us down here in the lower 48, it was Thanksgiving this past weekend. We had family and guests, along with two children. Kyle was there and is 9 years old. A very bright young man and very inquisitive. After dinner was over, we sat around the table as the girls cleared it off and went into the kitchen. So we're talking at the dinning room table and Kyle was into this, then into that and he then started staring at something and I didn't know what he was talking about, when he said, pointing to a table top..... what's this ??
What ??
This thing ??
Kevin stood up and said...... the telephone ??
No, this thing with big round numbers on it.
I tried pressing them and nothing happens.
His sister went over and said, Kyle, that's an old fashioned telephone.
No, it's not. It doesn't work like a phone.
We all started laughing..... Kyle has never seen, heard of or used a rotary telephone. His sister showed him how it works and then he said, what's that noise ??
The dial tone. On cell phones, you don't have one of those, either.
The kid never saw such a contraption.
Everyone I've told since then has laughed and said, I never thought about it for these young kids today.
10 seconds later he was into something else and the telephone thing was forgotten.

The things most of us take for granted, huh ??

I have an old phone booth in my front room at the shop...you should see how kids react when you explain that if you wanted to make a phone call outside of the house you had to find one of these little glass houses on the side of the road and put coins in the phone to make it work...and forget about long distance, you'd never have enough change.

Sometimes I wish we could go back to the time of rotary phones. You can never say you're comfortable with a given level of technology and stand pat. Technology just drags us along in its wake.

Not so sure I'm better off now.

There was a website one time that you could input your birthdate, or those of your children, and it would tell you all of the things they will never know of... like Dial-Up internet, VHS, Rotary Phones, Floppy Disks and the like. It was really interesting to see!

I wish I could find it... I don't remember what it was called. If only I could dial into AOL... wait what? :)

when i got my corvette it had a cassette player and while riding with my grandson (13 at the time) i went to pop in a tape and i get "pop what the heck is that?" so i explained and popped it in for him to complain about the old time music and had to put on the radio...haha
it's crazy but i am sure there are things our parents grew up with that we didn't have or that changed and we didn't experience. i guess todays generation will just read in the history books about the things we grew up with in the olden days...haha
