why can't business cards be glossy

I saw a thread around here where glossy business cards were bashed. I never really thought about it but what is the thinking on matte vs. glossy business cards?

I've had a couple people want matte. I think it's a personal preference. I'm a glossy guy. I think they are stronger, more resistant to things, and look better. Sucks for writing on them though, but usually not an issue.

I give my clients a fine point sharpie with their first set of cards or tell them what to use. Since I've pointed out that there are pens or markers that will write on glossy cards..I haven't had an issue with ppl wanting no gloss. I think matte cards are good for some things...but yes the expense of the average client isn't worth it. :) Kyla

All my business cards are laminated......But then I also give out a lot of sticky pads and note pads......Even if they can not write on the cards, they can write on the pads..........

we like to use a C1S...that way the front is really nice and glossy and the back is still able to be written on.

I've always been a fan of glossy card stock. It gives full bleed graphics on card stock that extra oomph. Now, for softer colors and average layouts ... matt card stock is fantastic. And that is not to say I don't ever get metallic cards, screen printed cards or even die cut cards. all have their place and what you need to do to make them look good.

I say use what you need to get the effect you want.

last time i had mine done i went with glossy both sides.... jury is still out, to me they look like a deck of playing cards.... not that that's a bad thing.....

I got mine in gloss so when i give them out i don't want nobody to write somebody else's stuff on my card.

90% of our requests for cards are glossy. I don't know why, they just are. Ours are glossy as well but there is no room on either side to write on it either.
