I am reading your thread with interest as I also have an older machine (VS-540) running VersaWorks 5.51 on Windows 10.
Here are my thoughts.
VersaWorks 5.51 seems to be an update of VW 4.0, so use 5.51. I found an old Roland site with a trail that linked 4.0 to 5.51 but all the links are now dead. VW 4.0 wasn't even available by download. You had to have a disc.
I see the sketchy archive site for VW didn't seem to work for you. Seems to me that there is some secret sauce involved in downloading RIP files that archives just don't provide.
Here are my suggestions:
1) Update to a Windows 11 computer. They are cheap - especially refurbs - and have Microsoft support. I don't think using Windows 7 does you any favors. Versaworks 5.51 works just fine on Windows 10 and Windows 11 should be fine too.
3) Easiest: There is a VersaWorks 5.51 disk available on eBay for $50. If you have jobs in the pipeline and can't mess around with computers and software, that should be the easiest solution.
2) Favorite: VersaWorks 7 is said to work with SP300i machines (as well as VS540i, which interests me). I don't think the i machines are all that different from the non i machines. I would simply go to
https://downloadcenter.rolanddg.com/contents/software_parts/VW7_select-model_en.html
and download the VW software to a Windows 11 machine. I haven't tried this myself, but in fact have a Windows 11 machine to eventually replace Windows 10 (when I get the nerve), so plan to experiment.
4) You could have someone copy their VW 5.51 files for you, but suspect it would miss the secret sauce. I never have much luck copying applications. If I were a (too) nice guy, I'd do it for you, but everything works for now and I'm scared to death about touching my own application. Perhaps another member here feels more confident in rooting around their operating system or has a copy that they would be willing to share with you on a dongle.
5) I could be completely wrong, but don't believe it makes much difference to the computer whether you use a USB or Ethernet as long as there is a checkbox for either solution in the software. Your new Windows 11 box will have both even if your SP300 doesn't.
Finally, I will be interested to hear how you solved your issue because we are both running older machines and it helps the knowledge base to know how to fix a problem.
