Fire him and if you can legally dock his pay then do that as well. That’s not just workplace anger, it vandalism.

Knows just enough to get in a lot of trouble..
If you are worried about him coming back, you can officially have him criminal trespassed. Not a lawyer; I have just heard about it, but basically they give him a written warning not to return to the property, and that way if he does come back, even in a non threatening manner the Police can actually arrest him and do something about it.

Absolutely fire this person. Make sure you have HR or a 2nd person there as a witness. Ideally 2 to help you escort them from the building if needed.

I once had an employee with a tendency towards property destruction; he was smart, not terrible at his job when he felt like it, and overall I liked the guy, so I gave him way more chances than I should have. These types of personalities tend to progressively burn bridges until they have no one left in their corner, and then you're the a-hole for sticking up for them.

Fire them immediately, and cover your ass legally as much as you can. Make sure you have some sort of plan in place in case they go postal and hope they go away quietly.

Good luck, hope everything goes as well as it can.

I think you already knew the answer when you posted but hopefully you feel better about your decision now!

My friend is the HR at a factory and she is working on firing a guy with multiple personalities. He won't take his meds so she's constantly telling him, "Make sure you tell everyone (meaning his multiple personalities) we have a meeting or whatever". One of the personalities threatened to kill himself last week so they are letting him go...but she's concerned the personality she tells won't tell all the personalities and he will keep showing up LOL

The week before some guy broke his penis at home and called for short term disability.

It's so much fun being her friend, I love all the stories :roflmao:

After seeing the video I don't think there is any question he should be let go. That is not acceptable in any way for an employee to do that. Even if he was honest about it, just the fact he didn't own up to it just makes it even more solid of a case.

Torture him first and make him admit to what he has done. Then, make him say he's sorry and will repay for the damages or you'll have him thrown in jail...... and put it in writing. Then tell him, his talents are no longer needed. You're the weakest/missing link. Good-bye.

you're a small shop? fire him. Your state is an at will state. You can fire him for whatever reason.

Indiana is an at-will employment state. Generally, employers may discharge employees for any reason or no reason. (taken from the web)

Take him aside, give him a hug and tell him you are sorry he had a bad day. NOT... fire his ass and tell him he is liable for damaging your property, that you have video of his actions, and you will be filing charges if he fails to pay.

you will be filing charges if he fails to pay.
IDK about how worthwhile this is. Like, f*ck this dude, but it's doubtful he has the cash to pay this out of pocket, and now he's unemployed. do you think it's worth the time and effort to 'file charges' for damage to machinery that he's expected to utilize in his daily tasks, even if used improperly, it would be nearly impossible to argue malicious intent vs accident.
Just let him go, cut ties, don't bother holding his check, give him zero reason to return, and let him know your competition is hiring...
