I've had great service from HP/Colorspan on my 9840 (about 1500 hours on it). Sure there have been problem and new parts. Its been down a total of about 12 days out of the 9 months we've had it.

the 9840 is a much different machine than the 5400 series. The 9840's were heavily tested and though they still have the colorspan unreliability, they are nowhere near as bad as those 5400's. E.G. The 9840 won SGIA best in show printer of the year when it was released in 2006(?)
There is no IP address for the videonet. you need a independent card running the videonet protocol and it will automatically recognize the printer.

on a side note, you can also use the object>expand command. This works if your stroke is inside or outside and not center, b/c when you "outline stroke" command it will outline to center regardless of how you really designed it.
not possible. forget about the heads, trying to figure out how to install heaters alone would be more than the cost of just buying a cheap solvent printer.
