  1. Happy Thanksgiving - plans?

Thanksgiving is traditional. Wife makes some of the best turkey ever, just gonna eat till I pass out today, repeat daily with leftovers till they're gone. Christmas I usually get the kitchen and make lasagna using my grandma's recipe. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!
  2. Hiring Designers for my Sign Company

Wish I could agree it's that easy. You're also creating and designing logos, re-creating logos and other elements in vector that a customer can't furnish, it all takes design talent, plus knowledge of printing, working with color gamuts, materials, etc. Plus there's always those pesky deadlines...
  3. Looking for a poly material replacement

Big Systems out of WI has a pretty big selection of blockout films for roll-ups. They do have the grey backed, use that all the time, prints fantastic, but I think all the aqueous is white front & back. Don't know how difficult it is to ship stuff from down here, but here's their link...
  4. Display lightboxes - would anyone use static cling as only printed graphic layer

Test it first. Used to do some retail displays like that for one chain of stores so they could swap out promotions, but these went on the front of a lighted panel. Once we found the right combination of materials it worked OK, I didn't like it much, but they liked them. Rather than static cling...
  5. Hiring Designers for my Sign Company

Didn't realize how bad it had gotten, or how hard it is to find qualified people today. When I got bored and came back out of retirement, I didn't think I'd find anything back in the industry, usually old dinosaurs like me end up as Walmart greeters or convenience store clerks, regardless of...
  6. Need input on which kind of Computer is the best to use for Designing.

Dell for the win. That's what I use at home, spec'd similar to the Mac here at the office (processor speed/ ram/ video/ etc), and will run circles around the Mac. And way friendlier on the budget.
  7. Raster and Vector Image Customer Rant

I used to too... Then I started using Affinity. It makes doing gradients and masking with blurs for those hard to hit ones so easy, and it's all live preview so you can adjust & tweak things as you go and see what's changing as you change it.
  8. Question on material used for construction

Have one that style back in the store room collecting dust that was never installed due to last minute customer design changes. It's all aluminum. Sort of the same construction as channel letters, but with thicker material. The face and back are just panels cut the same shape, the outer is bent...
  9. Storage of Vinyl Upright

+1 for the core holders, I just line em' up along the wall behind the printer. And they're free with every roll you buy :thumb:
  10. Question How would you do it?

Alumigrahic only has a 1yr lifespan. Plus, for some strange reason they seem to be ok with holes in the building, but not painting, or applying adhesive vinyl
  11. Question How would you do it?

Boss is going down there this weekend to do a survey & get the budget. We've done some work on other buildings in the area this is, and they're not tightwads, but there will be a limit. I know what Daktronics cost, I'm pretty confident that'll be out, but I also can't imagine our installers...
  12. Material for horticulture stake sign

Printable semi-rigid PVC. Used to make inserts for store displays with it years ago. Got it from Big Systems, they had a heavy and medium. Comes on a roll, printable, and you can run it through a cutter (just score/ fold and tear out), or cut by hand. I don't see the heavy stuff on their site...
  13. Question How would you do it?

Got a request from a company who wants to cover the side of a building, new thing for us. It's 400 feet long, 4 stories tall, and they want to cover the entire back side of the building overlooking an artsy-fartsy part of town with some modern artwork. Haven't gone to look at it yet (150 miles...
  14. Newbie Designer Here

Welcome to the madness. :welcome: I started almost 60 years ago hand lettering trucks, went into digital design almost 30 years ago doing web elements for programmers, then into the display market & signage. Retired once, and back at it again. Best advice I can give is get good at redrawing...
  15. Not sure what is causing this.................................................................. ??

I happened to catch a product video 3M put out back when it first came out. I thought gee, a protective film is cool, but never thought people would have to find out it was there like this. I will say even if I knew it was there, and hadn't seen the product video, I probably would have removed...
  16. Hiring Designers for my Sign Company

If this is a sign of the times, get ready for a shortage of designers as time goes by. Our local tech college had a graphic design program, but they pumped out tons of budding new designers for every job available locally, so the only one making a living off it was the school. They discontinued...
  17. Check out my new handicap ladder!

Only 53??? Yer a young pup yet... I'm pushing 70, every time I even think of ladders something hurts. I think I'm gonna order one of these.
  18. Where Do I Get Vinyls That Look Have Abalone Shell, Pearl, Beautiful Colored Minerals Printed?

VVIVID has all kinds of specialty vinyls, architectural, marbles, woods, textured faux leathers, holograph, security films, etc, etc... most in 60" widths, partial or full rolls. Don't know if they'd have what you need or not. I've only used their gloss 3d carbon fiber so far, but they have some...
  19. Raster and Vector Image Customer Rant

I kinda like that $50 setup charge across the board for anything new too, might just propose that. Right now we charge $65hr (more if they're a PITA right out of the gate) with a 1hr minimum to recreate anything we get that's not in vector for our use only, if they want the file when it's done...
