  1. Basic Essentials to start a Signage Business

Your knowledge is "severely limited"? You're kidding, right? Your knowledge is the foundation everything else in this business was built on. The keys on the first Gerber Signmakers followed the sequence of thought signpainters used. The best signmaking software followed along the same lines. And...
  2. Sign Painting Documentary

just more proof to me I was born in the wrong millenium. I had been painting signs for almost 12 years before Gerber hit the market with sign painting killing machines. It'll never truly be gone until we're all gone. I paint at least one sign every other month or so currently. Nothing more...
  3. whats ya hobby

+1. Just get out my Ovation Balladeer 40th anniversary reissue and work on my finger pickin' efforts. Startin' to pay off too - I'm getting compliments on my playing again after 40 years of pickin'.
  4. donations some times just feel good...

Early on in my self employment, after I had my first Gerber Signmaker, I decided that anytime a church contacted me about lettering a Sunday School van I would donate the work. I have no idea how many of them I did. The gesture backfired on me when my little brother came to work for me primarily...
  5. Awesome artist - former sign designer

http://villarrealist.com/ I worked with this guy 35 years ago at the second sign company I trained at. He was the designer there and we became good friends. I recently googled him and found out he has been in NYC since '88. He got started by doing paperback book covers illustrating. I'm...
  6. E-Z Flow lettering enamels???

It says regular thinners won't work... they say that in addition to their reducer urethane reducers will work. That puzzles me since this is an alkyd enamel like 1Shot. My only problem with urethanes is that brushes deteriorate 3-4 times faster than with oils and regular reducers. I have to try...
  7. E-Z Flow lettering enamels???

http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/kspstriplett.aspx Anybody tried this and have a review of it?
  8. Sweet

Well, since I'm neither odd nor backwards - there must be another explanation. This whole conversation is merely a pointless diversion I for one am not taking seriously since none of us propounding our beliefs can be either be proven right or wrong. Actually, I kind of regret having participated...
  9. Sweet

I wasn't proposing predestination as in the Calvinism variety - I know religion is a no go topic. I also don't associate a prescient entity with the Universe, so nothing supernatural in what I said either. I just think all our cards are dealt by the Universe and it's where our number is stored...
  10. Sweet

Irrespective of the lifestyle improvements cited, there is a cog turning in the Universe with your name on it and there is a predestined stopping point on it - no matter what you undertake to change it your efforts are futile. I like Gino's comments with all the "unless's" as well.
  11. Sweet

After all I've been through with 18 major surgeries in just over 20 years, it's apparent to me it's going to take an awful lot to kill me. I am the oldest of four... all 3 of my younger siblings were diabetic - not me - two of them had chronic heart failure/disease - not me, my heart tests...
  12. Conflicting Advice to Newbies

During the 35 years or so I was self employed in the sign business I frequently hired experienced sign painters (before computers) to subcontract work for me. My existing business - with an overhead - would contract the job, take 20% off the top to cover OH and materials, and split the balance...
  13. Beer!

All I remember of my now defunct beer drinking career is all the years I spent pissed after Stroh's beer was no longer being made. I used to love icing down a case (24 bottles), putting it in the back seat of my vintage VW bug, and driving from one end of Indiana to the other on the weekend to...
  14. Latest Gold Wing...

I do this method on every job. I start out by painting totally freehand designs on a white aluminum panel with black paint. I make a couple different versions for each panel on the motorcycle. When it's dry, I lay pattern paper over it and trace a refined version where I'll usually edit the...
  15. Latest Gold Wing...

I'm thinking of specializing in this brand of motorcycle. They are so much fun to pinstripe. This one has a shade shifting paint job from orange to deep red as you walk around it. Striping colors are silver metallic, charcoal metallic and black.
  16. Bad neighbors.

Steve... maybe this true story will help ya understand why this happened. I got a call from a business wanting a rather substantial storefront make over. When they told me where they were located, I realized they were a few doors down from you - the other direction than this tire shop. I asked...
  17. Removing sharpie marker on a wrap

My wife is a kindergarten teacher. She said all teachers know that hairspray removes Sharpies... I had the opportunity to try it on an aluminum panel once and was amazed at how well it worked.
  18. Anyone have plans for Memorial Day weekend.

I'm striping a good friend's new Gold Wing for free - mostly cos he rides with a large group of Gold Wing owners and I told him I was gonna take it in any direction I felt like. Actually looking forward to having a ton of fun on this one... this weekend can't get here quick enough.
  19. Way off topic but who has some advise

2004 was last year I was there. In all likelihood I striped that bike since they didn't let beginner stripers touch Slammers.
  20. Way off topic but who has some advise

Is that bike an IronHorse? If not, they copied one of our popular graphics design on it. I could stripe four of those designs in half a day when we did a run of them.
