I've never noticed that before. But when I click on it, I don't see where any more screen real estate is saved. But maybe your workspace is different than mine. Regardless, that zoom box is all connected to the frame with the sliders and arrows. I doubt there is a way to hide that entirely
the only way I know of this is to have the navigator panel open
Not sure how or why you want the outer frame removed though. It contains the arrow sliders to allow you to move around. I don't see how you can hide it anyway
another option is to login to your mac under a different account. If the problem goes away then it is not your computer but rather something is amiss under your username. You could also try trashing the illustrator preferences. In doing so it could take care of the problem, If not and you want...
I am an exclusive Apple user. Though I still use an iphone 4s. Never used a case, full glass back and front and have NEVER dropped it or shattered it. I guess I am lucky and super careful

If you use Illustrator there is a function in the spacing with options for optical and auto. The bottom sample here shows optical which is a bit better and tightens up the extra spacing that always shows up around the number 1
You still have to tweak sometimes but it helps if you are not too picky
