  1. Discussion What's the most common design mistake you see made in sign design?

I completely disagree. It's the printer's job to know how printing works, not the client's graphic designer. Print shops shouldn't need to make clients produce files to a spec. If you have a competent designer or prepress operator, they should have no problem dealing with all the examples you...
  2. Discussion What's the most common design mistake you see made in sign design?

Upside down or backwards letters bug me the most, probably. Upside-down S is by far the most common, followed by upside-down serif N. I've also seen M's and W's swapped, and carved wood signs always seem to have A, M, W, X and Y mirrored so the heavy stroke is on the wrong side.
  3. Identification tags / text labels for Artworks in illustrator

I didn't really address the part of the question that mentioned ensuring the labels don't cut. I would assume that you use a special spot colour to tell the plotter which parts to cut? I thought it went without saying that you wouldn't use that spot colour for the text labels.
  4. Identification tags / text labels for Artworks in illustrator

I can think of four ways you might be able to do this. How's your coding ability? Illustrator supports scripting in Javascript, AppleScript and VB Script. A script would be the most natural way to solve this sort of a problem. Learn more at...
  5. Adobe Illustrator 24.2 (CC 2020) Update

This is great! They've also finally increased the maximum bleed to 24 inches (used to be 1 inch).
  6. Disagree Icon

What gets me is that thumbs down is Disagree, but thumbs up is Like, instead of Agree, and then we have a separate button for Agree. Makes no sense.
  7. Wide Gamut Color Test File

Are you perhaps overthinking this a bit? I would just get a few colourful photos from Unsplash and print them side by side with Web Coated SWOP v2 conversions of the same photos. You could also make a small chart of colours that are far outside of typical CMYK (like RGB...
  8. SignLab - Issues when saving as PDF for use in Illustrator

PDF is not a format for working files, it's a format for finished files. The clipping masks are just how PDF files are built, usually. The problem is, there is no standardized format for working files, so the best thing to do is test it: export from Signlab to each format that Illustrator can...
  9. Vector to KKR

Yes, it's been mentioned here a few times, as it was announced last July. Correction, though: KKR did not buy Vector Capital. They bought Corel from Vector Capital.
  10. What kind of font?

It's not a font. Those letters are clearly drawn/engraved by hand. Also, I love how they've done the accent by just extending the 3D extrusion.
  11. Need Help Need a layout done correctly for new Century 21 rebrand

Ugly is not a matter of opinion in design. That's art you're thinking of, not design. Personally, I'd rather do good work and get paid for it. If you're only doing the latter, someone's going to catch on eventually and quit paying you.
  12. Need Help Need a layout done correctly for new Century 21 rebrand

What is so difficult about these brand guidelines? I'm just curious, if anyone could send me the PDF. Can't find it online.
  13. Artwork Proofing

You're only partly correct, if a PDF is secured but with printing enabled. If printing is disabled in a secure PDF, then your workaround does not work, since most PDF apps respect the security settings.
  14. Artwork Proofing

We actually don't send proofs for most jobs that the client sends artwork for. What's the point of sending their artwork back to them? I mean, we'll do it if there are a bunch of different parts to the job, just to confirm sizes and quantities.
  15. Export as EPS or PDF ? whats the difference ?

TIFF might save you a few seconds, but if you want to keep a consistent workflow, you can easily do the same thing with a PDF. If I was getting files like this often, I would create an Acrobat droplet to deal with them. Drag and drop any PDF file onto the droplet, and it automatically outputs a...
  16. Artwork Proofing

They're not perfect, but there are a few companies that make business management software for sign shops. https://corebridge.net/ https://www.shopvox.com/ Both of these tools will take you from estimating to invoicing, including artwork proofing, managing your production board, and lots more...
  17. Can we stop the absolutely DUMB practice of...

The US was basically the last country to get on board with chipped cards, and they've still barely started to implement them. Even in major urban areas you'll still be signing the bill at many restaurants and handwriting the amount you want to tip the server.
  18. Export as EPS or PDF ? whats the difference ?

PDF is the most versatile format, so we use it for all production files. If you're going to be in this business long-term, I'd advise you learn how PDF files work, and how to pre-press them in Acrobat. You won't likely ever have a reason to use other formats like TIFF/JPEG/EPS. P.S. I've...
  19. ID

Anyway, I'm 98% sure this sample began its tortured life as Corpid. There are numerous clues in the sample. Someone gave someone a low-res image of the text to trace, they traced it poorly (as one does), and then it was re-rasterized into the result you see here. Prove me wrong, I dare you.
